I already knew I had at least one African ancestor when I began my research. Who cares? My mother's side is often listed as "mullotta" in the 20th century records. She is a mostly a Houma Indian and her grandfathers are the original French and native settlers of Isle de Jean Charles/Terrebonne. The history is really fascinating.

My mom has been working on our family ancestry for the last 40 years.

She has traced my great grandfather back to Queen Boudicca Iceni which is pretty cool.

Lot of Irish and Scandinavian ancestors as well.

She has a storage building full of files.

Unfortunately, I can only go back to my great grandparents, who all immigrated with few records available before that time.

The key is networking you might not have records but someone else might have names of ancestors that links to your line.

You do understand that if you have your DNA analyzed that paper records won't be needed to determine if you have cousins who have also taken the test?

Additionally, your ancestors may not be precisely who you think they were. This might mean records are available (unless you're from somewhere like Papua New Guinea, for example).

On my mother's side, all my great grandparents came to the US, specifically Chicago after the early 1900s. I had a great-grandfather who owned a store and had a patent for an ice cream cone holder attached to a serving tray.

On my father's side, turns out I'm related to JBE. Not sure what to make of that one.

yes, but I wouldn't really expect too many surprises since we are only talking about a couple of generations in this country and I know/knew them all.

I actually have considered taking the DNA analysis just to check out whether the family lore is true or not.

Currently doing it now on Ancestry. The old censuses are kind of a bitch because there can be multiple spellings of the same name, no record of being remarried, etc. Even some of the names listed as official names can change.

My wife worked on ours. I recall she found some site online with photos of cemetery headstones that she used to validate birth and death dates. I don't have that site but if yuo are into it I bet it can be found; just an FYI...

There are some links that pop up on ancestry that lead to a site that shows graves. It's a really cool feature.

I've worked on mine for a little over ten years. The further you go back, the avenues you can go down to research increase exponentially. I'm distantly related to Presidents, Kings, Prime Ministers, and other historical figures. Tens of millions, perhaps hundreds of millions are related to them, too. The fun part though is that you can show how you are related to these people of note. The British kept pretty good records. The further back you go, the spottier things become but for the most part you can get an pretty accurate tree back to the late 15th/early 16th century. Even further back if they were someone famous.

Yeah, I got back to 5 generations. Then I figured that back in that time there were 64 people that I inherited genes from.....took some of the awe out of it....

Can you research more than one family? Could I do mine and my husbands?

To me, that makes it more amazing. Look at it this way...if any one of those 64 people had done one little thing different 250 years ago...something as simple as taking a misstep resulting in a fall and breaking their neck, you wouldn't be here today.

If one day Ug decided to go hunting in the rain and got sick and died, instead of staying warm in his cave, millions of us wouldn't be here today. World history would be drastically different.

My membership to ancestry also gives me full access to Newspapers.com, which you can search for obits, weddings, etc.

I think Ancestry is the best and easiest sight, although you have to be very careful to not approve false links. I won't link anything to mine until I have lots of evidence.

I am researching my husband's tree separately on the same account. I can set up unlimited trees.
