I have relatives that already researched us back to 17th century France. I really don't need to do anything else.
I did use one of Ancestry.com's free weekends to download the US Census pages from the first half of the 20th century, and to grab copies of my grandfathers' draft registration forms from World War I. Interesting to see how my grandfathers' listed their occupations. Also, back then, they listed brown eyed people as having "black" eyes.
Looking through the census from back then, TONS of guys in my family's little town listed their occupation as "Swamper". They made their living selling whatever they could drag out of the Atchafalaya Basin.

Many of my ancestors on my mother's side were listed as black or "mulotta," but I can only confirm one black ancestor. The rest are Native American. Back then, if you were not white, they would just record you as black.

And I'm not doing that DNA thing. My wife did and found out she's exactly what she thought she was. Unless some of my ancestors were cheating on their husbands, I already know what I am.

I posted in the other thread about the DNA today. I did mine during the free 2 week Ancestry subscription or whatever. Got back to where my mom's side arrived at Ellis Island from Italy. They were from Contessa Entellina, Palermo, Sicilia, Italy and her great grandmother was born in 1877. Anyone else have family from there?

Stay away from the casino tribes. They're not looking for anymore relatives. I'd call up your local university.

If you think you have N.A. ancestry and have no documentation, the easiest way to research it is careful use of Ancestry.com. If they are from the Terrebonne/Isle de Jean Charles area I can give you some leads.
