It was not immediately clear whether anyone was injured.

The U.S. Coast Guard is working to rescue dozens of people after a boat carrying 42 people caught fire about 100 miles south of Grand Isle.

Some passengers were able to escape onto life rafts and have been brought safely to shore with help from Good Samaritans aboard nearby boats.

Coast Guard air crews are searching the area and working to locate and account for everyone aboard.

This story is developing and will be updated.

That is a lot of people. Probably bringing people back to a rig due to evacuating from the storm.

Couldn't be lucky enough to lose one of those.

Judging by the planes they are raping the rigolets right now.

WAFB has this...

"The Coast Guard identified the stricken vessel as the Rem Andes, an 88-meter research and survey ship that was traversing the Gulf under a Cyprus flag."

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The United States Coast Guard said Monday (Oct. 12) it was assisting with the rescue of 42 people from a research vessel burning about 100 miles south of Grand Isle.

The Coast Guard identified the stricken vessel as the Rem Andes, an 88-meter research and survey ship that was traversing the Gulf under a Cyprus flag.

The fire on the ship had been extinguished by 2:45 p.m., but lifeboat rescues were continuing, the Coast Guard said Monday afternoon.

The 14-year-old ship was built in Poland and is operated by Rem Offshore, a Norwegian company that provides support to offshore energy installations in the North Sea and other international waters. The company was founded in 2017.
