RoH and NJPW are niche products.

I would love to see 1 of the smaller, but good companies, get a big TV deal and be given a chance to challenge WWE (like, say, Ring of Honor) It would be amazing to get some true competition back in wrestling... like in the WCW vs. WWF days

TNA was this from about 2006 to 2011, and it's actually pretty amazing to think that Impact has been on the air longer than Nitro and TNA as a whole has been around I think longer than WCW was actually calling themselves WCW.

The market though is no longer big enough for two mainstream wrestling promotions. If you look at Raw's ratings, they're comparable to WCW in 1999 and beyond. Wrestling lacks big name stars, and WWE's product in particular has become so homogenized and corporate that today's talent aren't given the freedom they need to carve out a niche for themselves.

it will take wwe getting so bad that there is an opening. whatever company also arises will need deep pockets, a good tv deal, and solid management. i don't think we will ever see that.

The Saturday Night Main Event shows they did a few years ago all drew horribly. The WM replays didn't draw either.

and look at where all the TNA stars are now

AJ Styles - WWE Champion
Samoa Joe - in WWE but currently out injured
Bobby Roode - WWE United States Champion
Eric Young - nXt (I'm guessing SAnitY will get a post-WM call-up)
Austin Aries - did the cruiserweight stint and left
EC3 - will soon make his nXt re-debut

point is... I'd just like to see some real competition.. don't think TNA at any point truly scared WWE

ETA: shoot... how could I forget... Rockstar Spudd is now the commissioner of the cruiserweight division/205 Live

TNA is a horrible example. Why Dixie Carter thought she could succeed doing what WCW did from 99-01 when they crashed out is beyond me.

The only thing that saved TNA is they struck lightning in a bottle with a couple guys like AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, EC3, etc....but for each of those guys there was at least one Abyss.

RoH could give it a go I suppose....BUT they would have to stop doing a lot of the cross promotional stuff that they do if they are going to be doing live TV on a major network every week. I think that's the big reason that ROH doesn't push for a major TV deal....they would have to change their model a good bit. I'm just not sure that ROH could pull it off. I'm not sure they wouldn't end up like TNA did at best.

At least it would only be 2 hours

That alone would increase the quality of Raw a ton.

I've been saying that for years. Part of what has made Raw suck over the past years is that at times they've had to push people into huge spots on the show that they simply weren't ready for. The perfect example of this is Roman Reigns...not now but 2 years ago. It was clear that Roman wasn't ready to get behind that mic and cut a promo when he was first asked to as a "top of the card" guy....BUT what other choice did they have???

The other example is Ryback....his program with CM Punk was fricking painful....literally for Punk and emotionally for everyone else that watched it

No, they didn't because at least in the USA, WWE is synonymous with wrestling. They are to wrestling as the NFL is to football.

Back in the day you essentially had WWE and WCW. Both promotions had a lineage dating back to the 60s and 70s as they bought grew out of the territory days. No one promotion was really more synonymous with wrestling than the other and they each had their audience.

These days, the NWA is still around but the name is essentially worthless.

Both TNA and, I believe, ROH started in 2002 and they have what is probably the longest lineage of any wrestling federations outside of the WWE yet they pale in comparison.

TNA can claim lineage with the NWA and by extension WCW. I've always thought TNA was basically WCW just in another form given the people in charge and a lot of their talent over the years. Impact Zone TNA is a lot of what I assumed Bischoff would have turned WCW into had he been able to purchase the company in 2001.

That said, I just don't think there are enough people that care about wrestling anymore for another company to become as big as the WWE. Wrestling was popular during the territory days and due to no internet and limited TV, kayfabe was alive and well. In the 80s, Hulk Hogan gave wrestling real, mainstream popularity with the WWE being able to host shows on NBC.

In the 90s, kayfabe was still alive, and you had probably the greatest collection of stars ever in the business all active at one time. You still had the older legends like Hogan, Flair, Sting and Macho Man in WCW whereas you also had new stars like Goldberg and Rey Mysterio. In WWE, you had Austin and the Rock with guys like Triple H gaining popularity as well.

Weekly episodic television was a new spin on wrestling and wasn't really perfected until around 1997 in either company, but over time, the wrestling product as a whole just grew stale I think, the internet killed kayfabe, and the big stars of the 90s retired without putting over any true successors.

UFC is where the old wrestling audience is now and will likely remain that way for the forseeable future.

Dixie Carter wasn't smart. I think that much is obvious. TNA survived on the Carters' money but not due to any executive decisions made by Dixie.

At one time they had a two hour time slot on Spike TV. I think if they had left it at that instead of starting touring and attempting to compete with WWE on Monday nights, they would still be a viable #2 promotion today.

Trying to tour different arenas is really what killed the company financially. They went from having guys like Nash, Booker T, Hulk Hogan, Sting, Kurt Angle, and Christian on the roster to guys that aren't even all that popular on the indy cirtcuit.

Dixie Carter is the worst thing that could happen to TNA. Jarrett had them at their ceiling, which was about equal to peak ECW. They had a cable tv deal and could draw a few thousand people to a show. Dixie turned them into 2001 WCW garbage though.

ROH is close to that level now. They can draw around 1000 for a regular show. The cross promotional shows with NJPW draw good crowds. NJPW sold out Long Beach two years in a row now in less than an hour. Supercard of Honor will draw 5000+ people and they just announced the All In show in Chicago in a 10,000 seat arena. They are basically the new ECW.
