I'm planning on taking a long road trip with a big group of people next year and wanted to rent something like a Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter. Any advice? On sites like Enterprise I'm finding them in the $240/day range. Does that seem fair? Might I find a better deal with some local guy with only a few vehicles? TIA

You can negotiate, to an extent, at places like enterprise, although admittedly it helps if you are a regular. I would still give it a shot though. But it you are trying to negotiate a better price, you need to be flexible on the type of vehicle.

Is that possible over the phone or does it have to be walk-up business?

I should mention that it's different pickup and dropoff locations. I see that if I make it the same, it drops to $123/day. Is that more fair? Do you think I negotiate down some of that difference?

That fricking sucks for you. I just rented a huge cargo van from enterprise 2 months ago for only $35/day.

It would be more effective if you go there and tell them your stituation and how much you want to spend. I guess you could try over the phone but when you go there, they seem very eager to help.

ETA: they always up the price a lot if you drop at a different location. I would try to avoid that if possible

The problem is my starting point is across the country and I won't be there until the day I pick it up. Any chance with mom and pop? Why does different location jack it up so much? Both spots are major international airports.

I rented a 15 passenger van for 12 people. The people fit well, but there was only enough room for about five people's luggage.

We needed another vehicle to haul the luggage.

A mom and pop shop probably won't have another location for you to drop the car off, much less the exact city you want.

You need to be sure someone experienced in driving a large van is at the wheel.
