Hey, thanks a ton for this thread. Ended up checking my accounts out and sure fricking enough, 3k was "sent" to some hacker named "Janessa".

The two transactions were "pending" so I instantly got on the phone and got in touch w/ the people who handle fraud. They were able to reverse it, but damn, I hope whoever "Janessa" is dies a very slow and extraordinarily painful death.

this happened to two of my co workers in last two weeks. they did not use debit cards. but they did mail checks for bills and use auto draft for some. bank said fraudsters got their acct # and routing info and we’re able to start draining their accounts.

No, it wouldn't. Any card, debit, credit or otherwise is protected by fraud rules (0 liability if reported in X days, etc.) dictated by Visa, MC, Amex, Discover, etc. if it has one of their logos on it. It's a condition of being permitted to use the logo in the first place.

Now, your bank can react like Regions in the other thread, or they can act like USAA and refund money when they start the investigation, but that has zero to do with whether you used a chip + PIN debit card, contactless credit card, etc.

The difference is, when your credit card info is stolen and used, it's the bank that issued the card that is on the hook for the fraud. But when its the debit card, its you.
Credit card companies will fight like hell to get their money back whereas not so much for debit card issuers.

Just about a month ago, I started seeing small withdrawals of $2.99 from my account. I didn’t catch it until about the 4th withdrawal in about 12 days. I had to get a new debit card.

You seem like one of the smarter posters here, IIRC.

Why use a debit card at all?

A credit card generally offers more protection and you earn some type of backend points or rewards.

Mostly because of convenience. I do have LifeLock though and an VPN, and they do send me alerts when something fishy is going on.
I know you are right about using the credit card and I’ve been advised to do this by others.

People with compulsive issues (ie addicts) have a real hard time with credit cards. Most businesses won’t take cash, so there’s not a great way to put a regulator on the spending other than a monthly cap which they can hit in days.

I've used this, too, but since it's hooked up with Norton it is a huuuge PITA.

The best way is to lock your profile with the 3 big reporting agencies (you have to do all 3) and then no one can get credit in your name.
Just unlock it when you're buying a car or whatever.

I get that part, but I see a lot of normal people using them, just like Rev said, for convenience.

I find CCs just as convenient, and of course, pay 'em off.

Is this same difference there when using your bank acct card as credit, instead of debit? I never use mine as a debit card by entering the pin#, just as credit.

That used to be true (to an extent), but the banks that issue credit cards don’t action fraudulent charges any differently than they would a debit card.

I guess you could make the argument that if it’s fraud on a credit card, it’s not “your money”, but the one time that I had to dispute a fraudulent debit card charge (and twice for my son), the bank did a provisional credit on our bank accounts while I/he was on the phone and took care of the rest. It’s never been an issue.

My wife and I do use our credit cards for most of our non-recurring expenses, but that’s mainly for cash management purposes and rewards (as you stated). The security advantages aren’t really a thing anymore.
