Remember about 10-12 years ago when the webs still felt like the wild west?

This board feels like the last place left that you can speak a bit freely. This shite is getting scary.

Anyone else getting these vibes, or am I alone?

Social media may end up causing the downfall of humanity

It’s made our species worse

People used to laugh at Ron Swanson on Parks and Rec. Turns out he was right. The internet has become the ultimate surveillance tool packaged as Social Media.

The regressive democrats have no idea what you are talking about but have no problem with it if it is happening.

The situation that is most glaring to me is reddit. 10 years ago it was amazing. It was like the greatest library of info ever created. It still can be if you're into an obscure topic like woodworking, grilling, or random shite.

I watched it change from the front row. Reddit got too popular and got sucked up by money, or something bigger. One-sided politics completely infested 75% of the site, and a huge # of that is from bots or foreign influence.

This board is a bastion of freedom...sure we lean right heavy but you can post whatever your belief is. There’s a lot of support for left leaning ideas and people aren’t afraid to voice it...don’t get me wrong we do echo chamber shite and bash counter ideas with emotion a lot but compared to the rest of the internet? MTHR fcking bastion of freedom.

im just proud we (as in the admins) dont cancel people or block people on here that most of us think are crazy. I may not agree with a left sided person, but I dont want their content censured.

The people that actually work at reddit are woke lefties. I've been banned so many times and I'm probably on a list.

More like 20 years ago

The internet was pretty locked down 10-12 years ago. We just didn't realize it yet.

I used to browse reddit a ton. Accidentally started using it for political news and i'm conservative. Jesus the amount of liberals there is astonishing.

The content seemed fresher for sure. Now it’s mostly a bunch of middle aged dudes bitching which is still fun to watch. Seeing the board get triggered by what seems like everything is fricking hilarious.

Mass censorship this past year really pissed a lot of folks off.

It was never really the Wild West. I had several AOL screen names and an account banned for flaming chat rooms in the 90’s. There has always been moderation and censorship on the internet.

Just being able to spend time on the internet without getting attacked by ads was such an awesome experience. Another thing TD does well by keeping that shite to a minimum.

YouTube was so much better when you didn’t have to see an ad every 30 seconds.

I remember that you could search for things about 25 years ago and get all kinds of crazy results, but all were loosely based on your search terms. You could modify your search terms and use special characters to make it more specific. Now, search results are much more, for lack of a better word, sanitized or curated.
