I know it's talked about all the time on here but for those of you who are looking at mountain areas in the eastern US where have you looked at specifically?

Seems like everyone on here wants to move to Eastern TN/Western NC. Western NC would be my first choice as I love the Waynesville/Brevard/Hendersonville/Highlands area but I worry about the politics in Raleigh and that affecting the cost of living. Eastern TN I've looked at but it would need to be Johnson City or Bristol. I feel like the whole Knoxville/Maryville/Farragut/Townsend/Pigeon Forge/Sevierville area is going to get overrun (or has already been overrun regarding Pigeon Forge/Sevierville) and overcrowded at some point.

Has anyone else here looked at southern WV? I know the economy there is trash but honestly I think for most of us who move to these areas we are either retiring or have a remote job set up. Not looking at Charleston or Huntington so much as they aren't great areas but I am really attracted to the Lewisburg/White Sulphur Springs area and have also looked at the Princeton/Bluefield area, both areas in WV near the VA line. I feel like they are both big enough to have the daily needs and if not you can get up to Charleston or Beckley in WV or Roanoke or Blacksburg in VA.

VA I worry about too much DC influence even in the rural western part of the state since DC controls Richmond.

Any thoughts on these areas? What areas are you looking at?

Look at Spearfish/Rapid City, SD. Great taxes and quality of life.

Moderately cold winters and warm, humid summer?

I live outside Johnson City. Check out the property taxes of the areas you are considering. Tennessee has low property taxes, but high sales tax so it may be null honestly. The Tri-Cities (JC/Kingsport/Bristol) is growing. JC's downtown seems to be going thru a revitalization which is nice. It's an old railroad town and right on the edge of the mountains.
You're an hour away from Asheville, Ski resorts, and Virginia outdoor recreation. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Healthcare is determined by a state’s economy. Trash economy, trash healthcare.

Keep that in mind

I worry about this area getting overdeveloped and then all the negatives that comes with that. Is that a valid concern or not really?

True and definitely a negative. I just really enjoy the beauty of that area and enjoy the fact that people seem to skip over it to get to Eastern TN/Western NC. Makes me less worried that area will be overdeveloped. But yes health care in almost any smaller town is a concern. I will say part of my thought process is being close to Roanoke and Blacksburg (Roanoke being a decent sized city and Blacksburg being a college town, respectively) would negate the healthcare concerns as they both have good healthcare systems. Yes it's an hour and a half drive but no worse than having to drive from Johnson City or Bristol to Asheville. Is this an accurate accessment?

Valid concern, I think, but it depends on how often you'll be commuting for work or generally out and about. Knoxville metro is definitely over-expanding currently.

I'm still probably 10 years away from making this move but I'm old enough now that I've started to look. Preference would be to have a remote position (I have a remote position now) so that there wouldn't be reliance on jobs in the local economy and I wouldn't have to worry about commuting for work.

NH is also extremely libertarian for being smack dab in New England.

A few things.

Asheville is a progressive Mecca but the do have a great health system. Look outside to Waynesville….great town and close enough to Asheville for what you need in a city. Hendersonville to the south is nice as well and the weather isn’t quite as severe in the winter.

I'll be moving home to Harlan County Kentucky when my working days are over.

It's talked about ad nauseum on this website.

Spent a few days there during and after a funeral. I liked it a lot. Large valleys with mountain ridges.

Louisiana folks sure do a lot of talking about moving to other places, does it suck that bad?

I wouldn't.

NC is one of the better-organized, well-run states in the country. The areas in which government is involved are actually decently funded and run. The state govt. stays out when they need to.
