Atlanta. More opportunities to jump around without having to uproot your family if you find yourself unhappy where you are at down the road.

I have lived in both areas of the country. For your circumstances, Alpharetta is head and shoulders above New Orleans. The climate is cooler and a lot less humid than New Orleans.
Georgia 400 is the major north-south freeway thru Alpharetta. If you want to bike to work then live on the same side of the freeway as your office. There are limited crossover bridges over GA 400.
The Pappadeaux's at Mansell Rd and GA 400 has a lunch buffet to die for!
My bil was transferred here many years ago. When he was offered a transfer to New York City, my sister told him she wasn't moving.
The traffic on I-285 (and sometimes GA 400) is horrendous in rush hour.

We both are from a town about halfway between Atlanta and New Orleans so neither city will be closer
Have you been to Bates House of Turkey?

The reason I moved to Atlanta is because of the greenery! Also, in the fall the leaves turn beautiful colors and the scenery is incredible.

Just popping in to say if lunch buffets are a factor, definitely choose Georgia.

I think I have a solution, the North Shore is pretty much a 70 mile strip mall that looks just like every highway going in and out of Atlanta, so you could have the advantages of strip mall living in either location.

Dude, Alpharetta has some of the best school in the nation. I don't know if you'll be able to bike to work but if you care about your children's education then that is the place to be. Plus, if you grow tired of your company you'll have an easier time in Atlanta finding a similar paying job. Unless you're in the O&G industry.

What's funny about Mandeville. While the northshore is far from perfect, it beats the hell out of living south of the lake.

Atlanta if you wanna die in a wreck, New Orleans if you wanna die in a shooting

single and right out of college - New Orleans
family with kids - Atlanta no question
The northern ATL suburbs are some of the nicest in the country.

They say once New Orleans grabs a woman; she will never leave.

Oh and I'd like to live near those offices so I can bike to work.
Cars are like undefeated against bicycles. Ten million to two or so.
Risk/Reward doesn't work.
You are an adult, time to put away biking to work.
If you want to "save the planet", live within walking distance of work.
Not in Central City, NOLA, that rhymes with being buried soon.
tl/dr: My god, you Arkansans are dumb. Or, nice troll.

Well after taking the many helpful posts from this thread into consideration and a lengthy convo with my wife....
We've decided to move to New Orleans. The pro's just outweighed the fact we would be in Tiger country j.k.
We're taking a visit this weekend to look at places and prepare for this next exciting chapter of our lives. Thanks again for the tips

Alpharetta and its a slam dunk. I'm moving my family back to Alpharetta from BR at the end of this month. We have 3 young boys under the age of 4 right now. The greenway is an 8+ mile trail through the woods along a creek that's awesome for biking, running, walking, etc. Theyre supposed to be connecting to other trails to the north that will make it much longer. Top golf is right there off 400 and Verizon wireless amphitheater is a stones throw from top golf and they have a good number of big name concerts. Public schools are all great in Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton, etc. Downtown Alpharetta has some good festivals that are kid friendly. Lake Lanier is 20 mins away and it's a lot of fun if you like boating, skiing, fishing. Not sure if you're athletic type but tennis is huge in Atlanta and a great way to meet people from the get go. Lots of good golf courses if you're a golfer. Hard to go wrong with raising a family in Alpharetta. New Orleans is more just a place to visit for a long weekend with your wife or buddies every once in a while.

My first job out of LSU (1990) was in Atlanta. We stayed 3 years and really liked it. I lived in Smyrna and Gwinnett, but had friends in Alpharetta. It is a really nice place; excellent for raising a family.
If we had not been native New Orleaneans we would have stayed. The only reason we came back was so the kids could grow up with extended family in our home town. (Yes, we started young.) We would have not done that if we were not confident that we could afford private/catholic schools.
North Atlanta has more jobs, better schools, less crime, less expensive housing, and a better overall environment for families.
I hate to say it, because I love New Orleans. We may have more cultcha, more festvals, better food, better music, way better fishing and football, and we are cooler than Atlanta, but......never mind, New Orleans is way better than Atlanta. You should come...

Are you seriously considering moving to Central City and biking to work?
