Advocate

According to the FAQ, the school had 786 in 2005 and by 2010 it had dropped to 405. Then the enrollment dropped each year, even though the number of voucher kids went up. By 2014 of the 225 students, 92 were on vouchers.

Now, the state says they can't take any new voucher students. Why not? Were the scores bad or something?

I wonder if accepting vouchers gave the school a last hurrah, or, forced a lot of non-vouchers students to go elsewhere.

I'd love to know what happened between 2005-2010.

Were the voucher students athletes? What is the criteria to get a voucher?

IMO they should have sold the school to the new one they are talking bout and relocated RHS with the money from selling it off.

I have no prob with a new school opening shop. But when u completely shut down one and then open a new one, that's when the red flags are thrown.

How are the other surround Catholic high schools enrollment and staying open? I know St. John - plaquemine, ascension catholic and CHS-PC has small enrollment and been open for years?

Facilities and faculty models are for a smaller school

Modern are these schools you mentioned Diocesan schools governed by Dr Mel or are they parochial?

It's my understanding that if they aren't diocesan schools, the parish priests run the school not Dr Melanie Verges.

I agree something is a bit fishy about closing one and then opening up another. RHS should have been allowed to move either out towards central or maybe somewhere near bluebonnet. It needed to be moved out of the hood and the new school wanting to come in was perfect to sell the school and be able to move.

Well... two thoughts.

1) Cristo Rey is a completely different model of school. If RHS were to adopt that model, it would look nothing like it currently does.

2) Sometimes something happens with a school reputation and location that the only feasible option is to shut it down, and try something somwhere else.

I know very little about RHS, but it's very sad anytime a school closes. My catholic elementary school closed about 6 years after I graduated from it, and a lot of schools have closed since Katrina. Many times, there is a common thread - the neighborhood no longer has the demographics to support the school.

Also, at lease here in NOLA, as the public schools start to improve and the catholic schools price themselves out of range for many people, it's becoming harder and harder to choose the Catholic school.

That and there's better private education even outside of the diocese in PBS, Episcopal, CLA, Dunham, and even So Lab that will take many of Redemptorist's athletes and still allow them to compete at high levels of play in a multitude of sport.
