I suggested to my DFW suburb native wife I make red beans & rice tomorrow. She wants cheese-free lasagna. She did do the laundry this weekend though.

It's way more than that

Yeah tomatoes create a different animal.

My coworker brings leftovers to work all the time. His wife cooks for an army and they always have a ton left. He brought jambalaya one day and there was tomatoes in it. I was like wtf? Why is she cooking it creole? He was like yeah I know. It was still good but just not the same.

Laundry day.

This is the correct answer. Back before the days of Maytag, moms would put red beans to cook all day while doing laundry on Monday.

I’m sure someone already said this, but I’m not reading 5 pages.

Why do people do it now? Are they just blindly carrying on a tradition from the past which is now pointless? It seems like everywhere you go to get lunch on Monday there’s a red beans and rice special. It gets kind of old sometimes.

I think some posters around here just sit around and think about shite to bitch about.

Eat it on Monday; have enough leftovers for Tuesday and Wednesday; allows you to share the wonderful essence of your farts with co-workers all week.

Had it for Sunday dinner and already hate being in the same room with myself.

Monday was laundry day, back in the day women used to soak their beans while they did the family's laundry.

This.

Apparently OP has never heard of "slow cookin' on wash day".

Not how I was brought up. I was told that Monday's were wash days and beans are something you can cook and don't have to stand over it the entire time it's cooking.
