I just chewed through a pair of J & Ms in six months and have come to realize that shoes and me are not well suited; therefore, I'm now interested in comfort over quality since I'm resigned to having to replace them frequently. Appearance is still a big consideration, though.

Any suggestions (preferably that I can find online)?

You'd be better off spending $200-300 on a pair of Allen Edmonds or something of similar quality that you can get resoled. They'll last 10+ years.

I used to buy J&M, Cole Haan, Ecco etc. Mine lasted about a year too before I had to toss them.

I'm mainly in an office/inside environment, but I'm also outside in the elements, installing/uninstalling technology, moving around heavy things, working with potentially staining fluids, etc. daily.

So I'm basically looking for the holy grail of shoes that are tough/resilient, stylish, professional, comfortable and inexpensive.

If I only busted up the soles on shoes, I'd consider. But I scuff mine up, as well. I can't imagine spending even more on shoes just to wreck them.

Would boots work?

Maybe a pair of RW Iron Rangers.

Don't think those would be "professional" enough.

How often do you wear them? If 5 days a week, six months isn't bad TBH.

I used to wear J&M, but have started buying higher end lately (J&M also had a very uncomfortable break-in period i've noticed).

I've bought some Allen Edmonds -- don't love / don't hate, but very well constructed and will definitely last if you take care of them properly. I've also bought a couple of pairs of Ferragamo's recently -- their rubber sole options are awesome if you live somewhere like NYC.

Gotcha. I sit at a desk all day. I used to get a year or a little better out of Ecco shoes. They are very comfortable.

When I wore a white hardhat I had a pair of black, Goodyear-branded steel-toe shoes. Probably not fair to call them "tennis shoes" but that's what they looked like.

They were great shoes, but probably overkill if you don't need steel toes.

The majority of the week. I also have a black pair of J&Ms, which are still in great shape, I alternate them with. I wear the browns much more often, though. I might have considered buying another pair of brown J&Ms if they weren't so damn uncomfortable for standing and walking all day at work.

Not bad. Wondering if I can get away with wearing them with a button down and tie.

Why not? It's like driving a F250 to the ball tournament.
