frick this. Unless you're a duck hunter, why would you want this. Every lab I've ever known made the owners hate it for at least the first 3 years. Dumb as frick, shed like crazy and very very destructive.

I'm all about dogs in a big way.... had well over a dozen various breeds. 2 & 3 at a time. You invariably see Border Collies listed as most intelligent but it's the margin of how much more so than other breeds that is surprising. They can have as much as a 1000 word "vocabulary" and never cease to amaze on their eagerness to comply and learn. I won't say that's the only breed I would own, I have others now and each has endearing traits. But after a Border Collie, they all seem like dumb dogs IMO. They are truly in a league of their own in "smarts".

One more thing I would add:
Unless you know you will be grooming your dog regularly, a shedding dog > a non shedding, long haired dog. I have a wheaten terrier(a hypoallergenic breed that doesn't shed) and it's a nightmare keeping her free from mats. I'll never have another breed similar in terms of their fur because of it.
Sucks too because I was always enamoured with olde English sheepdogs as a child, but I can't even imagine how much work their coat requires in regular grooming.

I have a German Shepherd. That is my favorite breed. They shed, labs shed, goldens shed, boxers shed...
If shedding is a deal breaker, get a Goldendoodle or Labradoodle and be done with it. The type of cross (which I won't go into) plays into the amount of shedding with these guys, so pay attention to that. I agree on bigger breeds. Whatever you get spend time with it, and either train it if you are up to the task, or get someone who will help. It will make a huge difference in how you feel about the dog, and it will make both the family and dog's life better.

That's not really a fair comparison.
No dog sheds like a GSD/Husky/Corgi when they're mid-shed. I'll sweep the floors and 10 minutes later spot a tumbleweed of my corgis undercoat rolling across my wood floors.

We also have a smaller sized yard.
Do yourself a favor and not be the family that has much more dog than house. It's not fair to the dog, and ultimately you'll pay for it one way or another.
