Depending on the situation I usually will tell about my wife's battles with cancer. I do it to let them know it's treatable and it's not a death sentence in most cases. I will also give advice on dealing with different aspects if they want to talk.
I agree, hearing about people dying is a pretty bad thing to tell someone.

It’s like people with kids. One person mentions something about little Brayden, so of course the person they’re talking to has to get their 2 cents in about little Kayden to one up them. And the cycle continues.

Glad to hear your wife is doing better. Trust me, the love and support of a spouse and family members is so important to recovery. You sound like a great husband.
Yes, I feel your disgust. IMO it's basically pride, and a glaring lack of empathy. Some people can be incredibly rude and disconnected from reality when it comes to dealing with stuff like this. They just don't get it.
