that's the one area where E put his foot down, Elvis had James Burton form a band for his Vegas return that stayed with him until his death, Elvis picked the backup singers

Yeah, he loved the Sweets, so that was it - they would be on the records and on the tour from then on. One time in the South (I think Georgia) at the very end of Jim Crow, they tried to bar the Sweets at the hotel for one of the shows

Elvis said, "No Sweets? No Elvis. Let's roll boys."

An exception was quickly approved.

I used to think Elvis was hokey when I was a kid. As I've grown older I appreciate him more and more. He has some amazing music.

That TCB band was tight! When Elvis wanted to bring it, there was no one better.

as I mentioned earlier, I'm friends with James Burton, he said that Elvis would always frick with them, try to throw them off by changing the rhythm, sudden stops/starts, etc., he said they loved it, they used to tour a few years ago, "Elvis Alive," or something, I saw them a couple of times, a huge video of Elvis in concert but they were playing live, I asked them how they did it, Ronnie Tutt was listening to a click track to keep time and they just took it from there

I have no friends that are in any halls of fame or have started foundations

I've always been fascinated with the life/times of EP.

James has been showing signs of dementia over the last few years, haven't seen him in a couple of years though, he's a very nice man, does a lot of giving back that few people know about

That's so sad but it's safe to say he's leaving quite an impressive legacy, musically and philanthropically

he's got one in La that funds the purchase of band instruments for kids in school that want to learn but can't afford instruments, one of the last times I saw him he was heading to Germany to play at some big show over there with a bunch of big name guitarists, the show bought him a ticket in coach, I helped get him into first class going over there and for his return flight, told the crew to watch out for him and take care of him, he was so grateful, he had me over to play at his new studio he had recently built in Shreveport when he got back

He is in the following Hall of Fames:

Rock And Roll
Country Music
Rockabilly
Gospel
Honky Tonk

Yeah...like that's going to happen again.

He was so much The King that even the King of Pop had to marry his daughter just so he could be in the royal court. Sometimes I can't believe this dude actually existed.

I've long held historically - all roads led to and then from Elvis.

Pre-Elvis there were large bands and orchestras (pop and country) which were progressively stripped down until there were only three pieces - Elvis, Scotty and Bill - playing a confluence of all that preceded them (pop, blues, country and gospel) in rockabilly.

Then after that brief window layers started being added back culminating in works like Sgt. Pepper and all which came after.

He was also the original gangsta and rock influencer of style - the template for what every modern day athlete and rock star aspire to be. He had the first posse (Memphis Mafia), all the cars, and all the women.

Too bad he never had a chance for a second act like Cash. It could have been special.

yeah, I don't know how it could be verified now, never heard him hit any super low notes and he loved the bass and bass singers, loved to hear J.D. Sumner rattle the walls

This is true too. He loved Bill Medley and all the bass baritone guys and based part of his post-68 Comeback look and stage presence on circa 60's Tom Jones. It's clear Elvis was a big fan.

My mom saw Elvis at the Louisiana Hayride when she was 10 or 11 years old. She thought he was trashy.

I’m a big fan of Gram Parsons. He was a member of the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers, but he was without a band or a record contract by 1970.

He would play clubs all around L.A. during this time. He would call James Burton to accompany him whenever he picked up a gig. JB was in such demand at the time he could charge whatever he wanted, but would play with his friend Gram at small clubs and bars a couple of nights a week.

I would give just about anything to transport back in time and stumble into a bar with James Burton and Gram Parsons playing in front of a few dozen people.
