He’s posted a bunch about it on Twitter. I linked the final video that does a brief breakdown. Basically, he used the corner of the bag the sandwich came in and found the shop based on what the bag looked like. Wild.
ETA: He also found the room and exact table the guy was sitting at when he ate it, which was in a completely different building.

He knew bagel shop +new York and then you can start looking at social media tags for bagel shops in New York. Even now Google images will bring up similar pictures for drag and drop. You find a handful of places with similar bags/packaging and start honing in on the answer.
I'm not saying what he did isn't amazing, but you have a good starting point.

Just read the article and then I searched for his dad’s post history here. I actually remember reading that thread when originally posted. I sat there thinking I have no idea how you monetize this to where he was making “obscene money“ but good for him.

Pretty amazing.
Finding bagels is cool and all, but this dude needs to be put on an investigative team where his skills can better society.
