quote:He was a hero to the bitter end.
In 1998, at age 82, he was shot to death during a robbery, defending Edna from a home invader. Carl had entered his living room late one evening and had found an intruder pointing a shotgun at his wife and demanding money & car-keys. Carl lunged at the intruder who fired his weapon, the shot grazing Edna's head and leaving her injured. The attacker than turned the weapon on Carl, fatally shooting him and the former then fled, stealing cash and the couple's car.

My neighbor who died a few weeks ago was a chopper pilot in Vietnam. He was with Tiger Woods dads group over there. Said he was a top notch soldier, command sgt major I believe he said. Special forces.
One of my dad's buddies was a chopper pilot over there. He talked about how the new pilots flew last in formation catching most of the ground fire aimed toward the front. He said he took the crowns off plenty of trees getting out of hot LZ's in a hurry. Amazing how reliable the UH-1 was.

It is weird to see. I played golf in Vegas. Took a car service/executive cab back to the hotel. Shared the ride with 3 other dudes I never met who were leaving the course too. The driver and the "dad" in the back got to talking. This was 2008 I think one of the young guys was going to Iraq Or Afghanistan. The dad and driver realized they served in Vietnam together and the conversation turned to them.
I was sitting where I could see both of them through windows and mirrors. They kept looking at each other to size each other up. It was like they saw whatever they needed and then started tearing up. By the end of the ride these two strangers had a weepy bro-hug that got everybody getting dust out of their eyes while getting their clubs.
Two strangers. Black dude and white dude. Like I was watching a TV show.

Not Viet Nam related but my father was a Marine in WWII.
When they landed at Peleliu everyone was sprinting on the beach to get behind whatever they could.
Dad said he saw a piece of driftwood and some rock with two other Marines digging out sand with their helmets so he sprinted over there and jumped behind the rock with them, knocking one of them over.
The knocked-over Marine looked up and said, _____ what the hell you doing here?"
It was a high school buddy of my dad's.
For many years that other old Marine looked after me like I was his own kid.
