Nothing earth shattering per say but interesting. My father served in Vietnam, and always wears his Vietnam Veteran hat. Yesterday I went to visit my parents and we went to a local family owned butcher shop. The owner asked my dad when and how he served. I found it odd they began talking and didn’t know each other because my hometown consist of about 4,000 people and my dad worked for the local telephone company. Needles to say he pretty much knows everyone. Anyway they went on to talk and come to find out, they both served in the army and were in Vietnam at the same time, and ended up being only 15 miles apart. My dad went went on to say “I know exactly where you’re talking about and saw numerous patrols go by us every day.” The other guy responded “hell, we probably waved at each other a few times.” Again, nothing earth shattering, but I found it interesting they both lived in a small town their whole lives and probably crossed paths during war, and never knew it.

My neighbor who died a few weeks ago was a chopper pilot in Vietnam. He was with Tiger Woods dads group over there. Said he was a top notch soldier, command sgt major I believe he said. Special forces.

Dad flew helicopters in Vietnam (he was the Marine's first helicopter school graduate and served in WWII and Korea also). He passed in August. He served in Vietnam with Gen. Marion Carl, who was a hell of a fighter pilot but was murdered at age 82 defending his wife from some home invading shite bag.

Gen. Carl had 18.5 combat air victories in WWII.

Dad (helicopter had unusual paint for a USMC chopper):

In a town that small it's surprising they didn't know each other, especially considering they were both Vietnam vets.

How did they never meet at any veteran's ceremonies around town? My dad knows damn near every Marine and older vet in a town almost twice that size.

My dad keeps to himself, never celebrates his service or anything like that. He’s proud that he served, but doesn’t talk about it much.

In 1998, at age 82, he was shot to death during a robbery, defending Edna from a home invader. Carl had entered his living room late one evening and had found an intruder pointing a shotgun at his wife and demanding money & car-keys. Carl lunged at the intruder who fired his weapon, the shot grazing Edna's head and leaving her injured. The attacker than turned the weapon on Carl, fatally shooting him and the former then fled, stealing cash and the couple's car.

Killer was some 19 year old punk with a criminal record. He got the death penalty, which was reversed, and now has a life sentence.
