re: Question for Those Who Moved Away From Louisiana

Too many people here use family and friends as an excuse to not leave an objectively bad state. Don’t get me wrong, family is great and I do love things about Louisiana, but it’s an objectively bad state by pretty much every metric.
If you want to stay in that situation because you want to be close to family, I think that’s great. There are no wrong answers and whatever makes you happy in life I support.
I don't blame anyone for moving away, I've wanted to move away in the past. But, other than climate and topography, I really don't know how much different my day to day life would be in a random suburb elsewhere than it is here in a middle/upper middle class neighborhood in Lafayette.
And I get that there are metrics that say the state is "bad", but I don't see the affects of those bad metrics in my day to day life.

We lived in Houston, Virgina, and Atlanta. All we wanted to do was move back to Louisiana. It was my wife’s idea and she’s from Georgia and went to UGA.
We absolutely love it here in Baton Rouge

Well what is this utopian town called?

Absolutely! The opportunities here are endless, which I've capitalized on. Things are setting up for me to be multi-millionaire because of it. Quality of life 1000 times better. Best thing I did in my life. Things are so good we're now considering moving out the country. Keeping a place in the states to come back to when I need to do business.
Your eyes are opened once you leave and you'll NEVER be the same none of this would've happened if I stayed. I left a nice home on the lake and a successful business at 36 yrs old because I knew the world had more to offer. Forget family and friends and everything else, you only live once!!

Everything is better, so glad we made the moved.*
*But we do miss family
I'm pretty sure this checks every box and this thread is effectively finished after you read that response.
Carry on.

You will miss friends and family but that gets better as time passes. It all depends on where you are moving as well. I mean if you are leaving La. to move to Miss or West Virginia then you really arent moving. If you are moving to a state that has solid cities with plenty of things to do then you will notice a big difference right away. If you have kids and they go to school you will notice a big difference right away . I say those last two sentences based on living in a good area of the city. When you return back to Louisiana that's when you notice for the most part why Louisiana sucks: bad roads , schools, bridges, cities and the list goes on and on. With that said a part of me will always remain in Louisiana because of the unique culture.

Get better. You don't realize how bad Louisiana truly sucks until you move away from it.

I moved to Seattle close to 10 years ago. The quality of life here is so much better.
No boil water advisories. No hurricanes. Far fewer loud, ignorant mouth breathers. More natural beauty. Mountains. Far better economy. Roaches and mosquitoes are few and far between.
Despite the very high cost of living, incomes here are also very high. I'm able to save half my net income each month.
I still love New Orleans (though I wouldn't want to live there). I miss the friendly, outgoing nature people tend to have in Louisiana. I miss the food. But outside of that, nah. Couldn't go back permanently.

Moved from Slidell to Katy, TX ovet a decade ago. Overall, has been a disappointing move.
By most metrics, this is a mismatch but our day-to-day living was much better in Slidell.

I think that's entirely fair and there is nothing wrong with that. If you are happy where you live, that's great.
But you may see the effects of those things more directly than you know. For example: Do you have kids, and if so do you send them to private school?
I grew up in Louisiana and went to private school, I didn't think anything of it. It's just what you did. It wasn't until I moved to a place with a solid public school system that it dawned on me that private school wasn't the norm everywhere.

North Seattle. Probably will never be able to afford to buy in the city, and am not really a suburb person, so I will probably move somewhere else in 3-5 years. But if you're looking to relocate in a *relatively* affordable area, I like it up north. Lake Stevens, Granite Falls, even as far north as Mt. Vernon, Burlington, Bellingham.
If you're conservative, Bellingham is probably a little too crunchy for you, but those other areas are worth checking out.

thanks, we've done some looking up north, a lot of people I know that moved out there seem to like to be around Gig Harbor, what's that like?

For whatever reason, it is sort of common for upper middle class in BR, Nola etc to live in the city rather than the burbs and send their kids to private school, whereas in most other states those people live in the burbs.

I am surrounded by private schools that would absolutely laugh at the Catholic Highs, Jesuits, Sacred Hearts, etc. of the world. I don't know a single person who sends their kids to them, and I'm including people who could absolutely afford it. It's just not as much a thing here. The public schools are very good so why not send your kids to them?

Gig Harbor, Port Orchard, Bremerton, Silverdale are all pretty nice places to settle down. I haven't spent a bunch of time there but I'd buy there before, say, Lynnwood/Everett or south King County. Check out Port Angeles as well. I'd imagine its expensive out there but its beautiful.
