I know, take it to a mechanic. But I'd thought I ask here first.

My son's BMW X2 gets these random steering wheel vibrations mostly when decelerating. The front end is aligned and the wheels are balanced. The car is all wheel drive and it feels like the vibrations are coming from the front drivetrain...I have no idea where. The vibrations randomly appear but seem to mostly happen when slowing down.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Probably needs new brake rotors

Could also be a wheel issue if you have aftermarket wheels and the hubs aren’t mates to the wheel properly.

Sounds like brake rotors

New pads and rotors turned (or just buy new ones).

can you feel it in the break pedal when breaking ?

if so you need new rotors, you cant have them turned once the rotors have warped they are annealed and they will just warp again.

if its AWD the front drive system might have an issue or it might just be low on fluid if it was never checked

also look into an ABS braking malfunction doing it

Front tires need balancing maybe. Or warped rotors.

Depending on age and mileage or use, could be a motor mount if it’s not something obvious as the others mentioned.

What machine was used? Has it been double-checked by another shop?

Does it happen only when brakes or applied or also when coasting down?

You can check the big cylindrical bushings in the front upper control arms. If they are leaking they are toast.

Slowing down no breaks. The vibration is not consistent. It starts then stops. Sometimes it doesn't happen.

This is the kind of info I'm looking for. At least when I go to the mechanic I might sound halfway knowledgeable... because the OT told me.

Is the issue mainly felt in the hands or in your arse. If it is mainly hands it is probably in the front, if it is mainly felt in your butt it is probably in the rear if it is both it is probably in the front.

I wouldn't worry about communicating with the tech too much if it is easily repeatable. If not and you can replicate it on command take the tech for a ride and cause the issue. On thing to note is even if it is easy to replicate if it is very speed dependant let the tech know the speed(s) it manifests at, if it is at 75 down to 68 and he only takes it out and goes 55 then he won't feel the issue.

Honestly, I would have to feel it to have an idea but my first shot would likely be a Hunter Road Force balance which will get rid of issues sometimes vs a less precise machine.

Hands. Definitely hands.

Big BMW fan here so no grief from me. I assume it is out of warranty and if you are in BR area and being a BMW family I also assume you know about Wedge Kyes which would be my rec for an indy BMW repair shop in the area.

Does the shaking occur at a certain speed when slowing down?

Get a new set of tires. The treads are bad/shifted in one of the tires or more.
