I'm not sure which board to ask the question, so trying here. I will be learning Arabic starting in a couple months, can anyone point me in the right direction for me to get a jump ahead? Books, tapes, anything?

No, getting deployed next year. Just want to have a small grasp of the language.

I really like the Living Language series. I've used it for other languages and I'm a fan. Duolingo is great too but I don't think they have Arabic.

I'll piggy back on this thread. Will be going to Japan in September for work and was thinking about trying to learn the basics in the 4 months between now and then. Any recommendations on software or websites to learn some Jap?

I haven't heard of the Living Language series, but thanks! I just didn't want to spend a huge amount on Rosetta Stone, looking for alternatives.

I'd say get a language software. You're not going to get writing and reading without it being personally taught to you unless you're a prodigy. The one I used isn't available in Arabic.

I'd look into a podcast first. They're free. Just find the one with the best reviews.

That's why I like them. They are cheaper and I think more effective than RS. You get 9 CDs and 3 books. If you have a long commute, it's best bang for the buck.

I find "durka durka goat fricker" really gets my point across.
