Question about DIY auto painting

So we have a Chevy work van we bought for dirt cheap last year that we use as a tailgate van. Well, as I'm sure you've seen on the road, these ALL have paint defects and chip/flake pretty bad. Well, we want to paint over it but I'm a little concerned about the prep work and painting over the existing crap paint job. Today we did what we could with a pressure washer and got a lot of paint off the front doors, roof, and hood. Realistically, what would I need to do to ensure the new paint (spray cans) sticks well? I don't think its possible to get it all off so I'm really just wondering if I could paint over the existing shite. This van probably won't last more than a few more years anyway, so quality isn't a huge deal if we have to occasionally touch it up. I just want to make sure it doesn't chip off with the old paint. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

First, whatever you manage to do is probably going to look pretty crappy...anything less than perfection will show up and be accentuated by a new paint job.
If you are ok with that, I would just hit the whole thing with some fine sandpaper or steel wool to dull down the surface and paint away.

If you're just using rattle cans to paint it, you'll be fine. Prep it by just sanding the top coat with 220 on an orbital to knock down the bad paint and make a nice even surface to apply the new paint. If any areas are down to bare metal, prime them first and prep with 220.
It's not that much more to get a spray gun and some automotive paint and lay down a decent coat. Granted, if you take your time, prep it decently, and use a quality rattle can it will actually make a decent job.
Coating is 80% prep work.

Thanks. Yeah we're not concerned with it being perfect. It's just a low budget thing we're only gonna have a few more years. I just don't want it to start chipping.

I'm assuming a rattle can is a regular like Krylon spray paint. Dear lord that is going to take a hundred cans to spray and if he's like me a few beers and I'm rattling around like Michael J Fox and that paint would be running all over the place.

You didnt say year so tough to know what the failure was- I'll assume its primer to basecoat adhesion failure like Ford and Chrysler in the early 90s.
If so, it needs to be sanded down to bare metal if using any basecoat/clear coat system. Probably wear out a DA sander doing a van- I hate doing pick up beds and they are perfectly flat and easy to access.
The spray cans stick to almost anything, so prep is a little less important.
Also check out the moparts.com site for the archived thread on painting with a roller. Sounds cheesy but with some attention to detail, might work.
Another option is a quick sand over with 320 and then white epoxy primer (catalyzed, like from SPI). That stuff is awesome

Bring it to a body shop and have them do the prep work and lay a coat of primer. Then yall can get crative with the rattle cans.
ETA: Back in my HS days our parish (Terrebonne) had a votech school, one of the courses offered was auto body. Instructors were always looking to take on projectsike this. That may be an option for you, all you had to pay for was the paint when I was there.

Use a DA sander to feather edge the paint that is left, put a nice coat of primer over the whole thing and let dry. Then wet sand it all smooth before painting. If you don't it will look like shite and be lumpy. Then you are ready to hit it another primer coat, basecoat, and clearcoat.
Lot's of youtube videos on how to paint prep. It's not easy to get it smooth. Oh, and don't rattle can it. Buy a cheap HVLP gravity gun from harbor freight and spray it.

Definitely don't use a wrap
Look into using your spray gun with Rustoleum paint thinned with acetone and with a hardner in it
You can paint the whole van for $75 and it won't look like your rattle canned it
