If they don't have a counter, you either got to bring it pre rolled or they send it off to get counted then deposit it. But it will take a few days if you go that route.

It wasn't my change anyway, so I was lucky to have it. Cleaned out this rental maybe 9 months after, and the tenant hadn't come back or called after they left. There were also thousands of comic books in the place

Wasn't a bank decision. The Federal Government made that decision for your bank. FED could not figure out how to accept the dirty coin thus they demanded only 'clean' coin deposits.

My Bank, Bank of New Orleans does it for free, as does my old bank Capital One.

So I had a shitload of change one time. Over $200 worth, and I decided to sit down, sort it all out and roll it. Took me nearly two hours while watching some random basketball game, I remember because it took most of the game to roll the coins. I bring them to my bank the next day and the first thing they do is break every single roll and pour it into the machine.
I was kind of pissed, TBH.

Not true. My bank gives me big plastic deposit bags to put coins in, no rolling required.

I have an old machine that will sort and roll your coins for you. I do it once a year right before summer vacation and usually have about $100 of extra cash to spend. It's easy arcade money for the kids too.
