Both my wife and I would like to do it but have no idea how it works. I got to thinking, if we did it for our son, would that do it for both my wife and I since his would go up our lineage? Do you pay to do it for one person or what?

these sites are just a big government conspiracy to get you dna on file.

I think ancestry.com actually has a family option. But I'm not certain.

So how do they "research" your background then?

You think they give you a family tree after you swab your cheek?

The DNA thing is about heritage not ancestry.

The actual ancestry records include census data, immigration records, birth and death records, etc.

Give me a couple hundred dollars and I'll tell you all about your ancestors. And you know you can trust me because my business name has a word like "heritage" or "lineage" or "ancestry" in it. I promise.

Ancestry has a free option but you aren't going to get a whole lot from it. It has different levels of membership and those grant you access to things like Census records, military enlistment records, and can link you to others that have trees you share relatives with.

The DNA thing is purely optional but can have surprising results.

I did some digging on mine, found out on one side we are descended from Robert the Bruce and on another side... well... when you shake some trees nuts can fall out.

Just go to findagrave.com if you just want names and birth/death dates. There's some other info too like if someone fought in a war.

If you just do the kid. You won't know which parent gave him the undesirable DNA or the kid may not be yours

Are you talking about the DNA thing or just membership to do research on the site?

If for DNA, I have no idea.

If for membership, you just pay the monthly fee and research all the family lines you want.

I paid for it. It wasnt worth it. I have a very unique family name (on both sides) and it still had difficulty giving me anything worthwhile. It went back to my great grandparents and that was about it.

My dads been doing our family tree for close to 20 years now. I’ve met exactly 2 people my entire life with my last name who were not related to me. No one in my family has met someone with my moms maiden name who wasn’t related to her. He’s got it back hundreds of years. You just have to be meticulous.

I am sure you have at least one crazy great aunt or uncle who has already put together your family tree.

He/she will give all this info to you for free if you buy them lunch and listen to them talk for a few hours.

I will be that crazy great-uncle one day. I hope one of my great-nieces or nephews does buy me lunch, and they better listen to my old man ramblings about their second cousins three times removed.

You can work all branches of your family tree with your account, both your side and your wife's side.
