They are still spreading and need to be eradicated with a massive live bait campaign.

Some USA boot maker needs to corner the market.

Watch the cowboy python guy. He has plenty of videos capturing them. He also has a video where he catches a 17' that almost kills him

Guam has been over-run by brown tree snakes and they too are spreading to other islands. Brown tree snakes will eat just about anything unlike Pythons who are ambush hunters for live prey. Tylenol kills both in any case.

quote:

Control Efforts Containment Strategies: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and partners like the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Guam Department of Agriculture employ traps with live-mouse lures, acetaminophen-laced bait dropped from helicopters, and snake-detecting dogs to prevent snakes from stowing away in cargo leaving Guam. A Habitat Management Unit on Andersen Air Force Base uses snake-proof fencing to study and control populations.

Is this a subtle hint to empty alligator Alcatraz into the Everglades?

The meat of pythons in the Everglades contains a high amount of mercury. many tested had levels up to 3.5 ppm. The state of Florida considers fish that have 1.5 ppm of mercury unsafe to eat.

They usually struggle in areas north of Orlando. They exist but they are smaller. 60 degree weather slows them down, and freezing temps can be deadly.

They have to move underground in winter north of that area.

And underground habitats even in Florida cant easily support bigger snakes. They are usually abandoned nests made by smaller mammals or along riversides below fallen tree trunks where gators tend to hang out.

The Everglades are perfect for the evasive Burmese Python because of the weather. It never really gets cold there and both the snakes and their prey can thrive almost all year. But their ability to spread into northern Florida is limited because of the typography and climate. Not impossible but limited.

We could easily see them one day in south Louisiana or in the marshy areas in South Carolina, but they won’t be the giant ones that seem to be so plentiful in the Everglades right now. And they are wrecking the ecosystem down there pretty badly.

Really? That’s weird. How did that happen?

Do they not have a year round season on them? Seems like that would be step one.

Granted the S. LA snow last year was rare, but it hits freezing in the marsh every year in LA.

If they could survive here, they'd be here.

Mussurana (Clelia clelia): This South American snake specializes in eating pit vipers, like Bothrops species, and is immune to their venom

This is a snake whose main diet is other snakes. It is revered in Brazil for decimating the pit viper population. There is some historical indication that they reduce their own population when they run out of other snakes to eat by cannibalism. They would be no match for a grown python, but maybe for brown tree snakes.

The Everglades is over 2,300 square miles with most of it very difficult to reach. I can't imagine the ones they are taking out is even a fraction of a fraction of the overall population at this point, unfortunately.

I would assume that's what they do when they're not filming a video. No reason not to.
