Yet plenty of people do it, so it is indeed realistic.

We had a pay phone. People had cell phones but they didn’t have internet, and games like they do now.

You don’t understand that the parents are the problem. Try taking one of their precious kids phones and watch what happens. They show up raising absolute hell and threatening all sorts of action. They also call and text their children all day!! I can’t stress enough how much the parents are the problem here. The schools try but at some point it’s not worth all the fighting. I don’t agree much with Landry and his decisions re: education but the cell phone ban is one I support 100% but I know it is up to the schools to enforce it and deal with the parents so I won’t be holding my breath.

Clearly those that support students having cell phones have never been in the classroom.
Cell phones have absolutely no value in schools. Nationwide student scores are dropping at an alarming rate and allowing your child to have a toy (cell phone) at school is going to have a negative impact on your child's academic progress!

I have a 10 yo and a 13 yo. Completely disagree with your opinion.

Because of teacher union-supported COVID lockdowns and mask mandates. Those years aren't coming back.
Giving every kid a laptop and "teaching to the test" is also a factor. Cell phones may play a miniscule role.

Completely false on our end so far.

Are you incapable of calling the fricking office?
Dumbass parents who a) helicopter over their kids and b) give their kids whatever they want and c) are completely unwilling to actually parent and instill crazy ideas like discipline and respect have completely destroyed the education system of the United States.
I say bring back whippings both at home and in school.

Some of y'all are extremely stupid. Imagine wanting the people who advocate to make your children less safe by pushing for gun free zones, confuse your children by pretending they can choose their sex/gender (which are the same things), and indoctrinate your children into believing white people and colonialism are the source of all of society's ills to also be the gatekeepers of whether or not you can contact your child for the majority of the day. It's school, not jail. Many of you need a LOT less trust in government institutions.

That's a whole lot of word salad to say you're enabling your kid's poor behavior at school (using their phones during class hours).

I love the use of the term "class hours" instead of "during class." You clearly realize this isn't a problem during actual class time and chose your words very carefully as a result of this knowledge.

Wait, are you suggesting that having cellphones out during class time isn't an issue? When's the last time you stepped into a school, particularly middle and high school. Half of the referrals I dealt with in a high school just a few years ago was kids who had cellphones out during quizzes, tests, teacher instruction. And this was in a high rigor, magnet school with good kids.
And I used class hours because I don't have an issue with kids using their phone between classes or at lunch.
But by all means, continue to be part of the problem of disruptive behaviors in class when teachers are just trying to teach.

A lot of it has to do with parents demanding that their kids have phones in class in case of an emergency
Our neighbor is a teacher, and I heard this from her firsthand

Every school has a phone available to students for legitimate use.

As a conservative who has also been a public school teacher for 30 years, I have a sincere “frick you” for you for generalizing about all of those things.

By that logic, LEO’s also work for you. If you get arrested, tell them you don’t need their permission to break the law.

Generally speaking I'd rather my kids not bring their cell phones to school even though they are responsible with their use of devices.
That being said with how screwed up the bus service has been with EBR and on a daily basis not knowing if my kids got on the bus or are still waiting at the bus stop or school b/c they have no bus, the cell phone has been extremely helpful.
Instead of having to have the neighbor call me (who goes to work after bus pick up and watches our kids with hers) or call the school every afternoon..my kids can send me a quick text.

My students are pretty easy. They sneak, but once caught, they put their phones away. My wife has a different story. She works with rougher and older kids. At least once every couple weeks, she has an incident where she tells a kid to put the phone away and the kid just goes off. It turns into a greater incident. It is almost like taking a drug away from an addict.
This is my deal. I do not take phones. If a kid refuses to get off of their phone, I hit the little button on my wall to get an admin up. There are some teachers that will have baskets or similar for students to put their phones into. I am not taking responsibility for thousands of dollars of electronic equipment.
Some of the incidents that I have seen in recent years are...
Students using phones to cheat on assignments and tests (constant)
Cyberbullying, which is extremely rough with girls
Phones being used to spread information that leads to expanded conflicts
Students filming other students breaking rules, especially fights
Students filming sex acts in the restrooms

That's typically the excuse used against them being restricted in schools.
When I worked in schools, we had a phone that was for student usage in case they needed to call home or if the parents called and needed to speak to their kid. Two things I learned in that time:
1. What constitutes an emergency to some parents is absolutely not an emergency. We had parents that would call claiming an emergency but wanted to talk to their kid to ask them what they wanted for dinner that night.
2. We had a system for transportation changes. So if a parent called to move their kid from car to bus rider or vice versa, we had a spreadsheet for that and would relay that to the kid at class change. There was no need for them to actually have a full on convo with their parent. This was a large chunk of our calls.
3. If families had an actual five alarm emergency (death in the family, major issue at home/with parent) someone often just came to the school because they would look for some help from the school counselor. This was rare.
The larger issue is that parents have been as bad about utilizing cellphones as a tracking device for their kids as anything. So they want that with them at all times. Folks need to cut the umbilical cord. Their kid will be better for it.

Keep the phone until the parent retrieves it. If it happens again, send it to the superintendent's office. If the parent doesn't show within a time period, turn it over to the police. Who knows, maybe they will find evidence of a crime.
Do something. If it doesn't work, try something else.
We tried this and had a parent try to file charges against the teacher that took it because they claimed the phone was "damaged" by the school. Another parent had a lawyer send a cease and desist to the district, claiming we didn't have the authority to keep the phone and were committing theft.
Great concept on paper, not in reality when you have parents who have nothing better to do but to bitch.
