My weekend car is a 718 4.0 GTS. Awesome car and not far from your budget.

Is Porsche reliability as good as people say these days? How are the maintenance costs? If I have to ask, it’s probably a sign to stay away and stick with Japanese cars…

I’m familiar with European motorcycles and rarely have issues but there’s less moving parts and less of an initial “investment”.

I have a 2016 Cayman, bought in 2021. Just routine maintenance. Very reliable car. Fun to drive too!

I don't have a lot of miles on it so I can't speak to the reliability. I'll say this, I'd never buy a German car. Maintenance and repair costs are ridiculous. It's the kind of car you lease so you're always under warranty and you have a 3 year out.

Love me some honesty, thank you.

Porsches are amazing though…just a shame they along with BMW, Audi, and Mercedes aren’t as cheap to own as for those living in central Europe. Not sure if reliability is the problem as much as upkeep with logistics costs and being able to charge a premium because of scarcity/branding (applies more to other Germans brands especially). Your average OT poor in Germany is driving a BMW daily…20-30km to and from work.

911 997.2 Manual

Good luck finding one in reasonable shape for a reasonable price. The 997.2 suffers low numbers due to global economic crisis and even fewer of them are manuals. If you do find a manual, they command a significant price premium over a PDK car.

Agree.

The 911s and BMWs Ive owned have never required anything more than routine maintenance.
All have been newer than 2018+, so I think has helped.

Throw the right tunes in it and it’s a drivers car. They need the maps opened up to be really fun.

Out of the box a stock 5 year old Nissan GTR does 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. Qtr mile is 11 seconds.

I know i have one that runs 9s now.

It's a blistering fast car for the money. But the awd and stock computer needs some massaging to make it fun to drive. You're not getting it to step the rear end out with decent tires and a factory tune. Throw on all the bolt on and tune and you have something fun to drive. And the rolling antilag is amazing.

As long as he doesn’t require the GT or Turbo, he can get a good condition manual for $70-$85k. I mean, he may have to look for a bit, but they can be found.

That is well within his stated budget and it is a car with a chance to appreciate.

Porsche is reasonably reliable and probably going to be MUCH more reliable than other high performance makes like Ferrari, McLaren, etc., but when something does break, it will be pricey. Hourly rates for mechanics in my area are about on par with mid level attorneys.

They are a blast to drive. Had a chance to drive a hatchback before.

Must keep up with the oill changes. They do not like dirty pil and will clog up and starve parts for oil and they are cooked.

Mini Coopers are really fun to drive.

Yeah, I'm on MINI number three. Unfortunately, MINI no longer offers a six speed manual Cooper. The latest redesign wiped out a lot of what I love about MINIs. Every generation has seen them get bigger and blander. If I were buying a driver's car today I would get a Porsche Cayman S.

Ended up getting the Acura Integra Type S in liquid carbon metallic. I love it. It’s a more mature version of the Civic Type R.

I wouldn’t put it in the same league as the s2000 from a handling perspective, but it’s close enough. It’s also much more practical and should last me a good 10 years or so, just hoping it keeps its value relatively well as one of the last pure drivers cars out there.

Part of the driving experience is decompressing once you’ve gotten to Point B:
