First are these programs worth it? If you have enough friends with dogs and have time to train should you spend money on these classes? Secondly, I see two different guys online in BR claiming to be the successor of Dick Russell. Any experience with either of these guys?

Can't vouch for the new guy, but Dick Russell's methods work. He was a good man and worked wonders with my dog. RIP Dick Russell.

Personally, I think it depends on what you plan on doing with your dog.

Is he going to be hunting, pointing, or showing? Then I think it would definitely be worth it.

Is he just going to be a family pet that you don't want to destroy your house? I think you could probably make it work on your own. From my experiences, Youtube and Google are pretty awesome resources for this, FWIW.

Send the dog to me. I will beat it with a hose until it hates you and obeys my every command.

I don't use my dog for hunting or anything like that, so I did the puppy classes at Petsmart and we had good results. It gave him socialization and he learned some basic commands in a place with a bunch of distractions. It was a pretty good base and I just worked with him from there. It was about $100 if I remember right and once a week for 6 or 8 weeks.

And to continue socialization, I just took him walk around Petsmart or Petco once a week or so just to be around strange people and dogs.

yep. I have 2 labs, and I don't hunt or anything i just have always liked labs. I trained them myself not to chew up stuff in the house and potty trained them too. Awesome dogs
