Definitely the route to go. Get the grill hot, then rub with the wadded up aluminum foil.
That's what I do. If I need to really clean the grates, I pull them out and use water and a wire brush. Then, rinse them sell with running water. Put them back on, get them hot, and wipe over with aluminum foil one more time. I don't use the wire brush and go directly to cooking.
Those new after wire safety brushes look to be a better choice, and I'm thinking about trying them. I haven't cared for the wood scrapers.

I get a quality welders wire brush.
Change yearly.
There's a big difference; I'm not saying I can't lose bristles, but I've been using them for years and it's night and day with a bs cheap grill brush
I use a farriers brush. The bristles are huge and stiff as frick.

Damn, definitely don't want one of those bristles stuck in my throat.

I feel the same way about restaurants that use toothpicks to hold things like club sandwiches together. Once had a sandwich where the toothpick had broken off and was only poking out slightly thru the bottom. Luckily I felt it when I held it. Also the use of plastic forks.

I just use an onion to clean my grill grates.

I grill at least 3 times a week and have been using a weber wired grill brush everytime when I light the grill. Have never had any problems, but I guess it can always happen.
My problem is, I have tried the wooden board and the other spiral wired one and they didn't do anything on my grill. Guess I can try aluminum foil, but nothing has even come close to working as well as my weber wired brush.

I use the "grill rescue" brush. It's basically a sponge
Got the same one for my FIL for xmas with a replacement sponge head so he can wash one and use the other one.
Grill rescue works great on gas grills, but I only use a charcoal grill and often as lower temperature. Won't work well on mine since I don't often get it up to 400 degrees and it could drop water on the coals.
I just use the balled up foil method on mine.
