Lol, my kid has a roll of paper towels in his bag right now to bring tomorrow. I saw it and was like “wtf does he need that for?”

I don’t know about overpaid.

But it’s not a rigorous professional field to get into, you don’t have to attend top colleges or even the better schools of a given state.

I think some of the loudest and most obnoxious complainers are playing with fire. If teaching started at 6 figures then we could demand teachers meet higher metrics and do a few more years of high intensity schooling. And if that happened, guess what? The type of person who bitches about teacher pay wouldn’t be able to compete with the high achievers who now see teaching as a more lucrative choice.

Considering they are employees of the taxpayer they shouldn't ever be making more than the median income of the district they work for.

That goes for all government jobs.

Amen. Even elected officials in Congress should make no more than the median income in their districts. If they improve conditions in their districts and median income income increases, then and ONLY then does their income increase.

Worked at several schools in several states. My spending allowance has never been more than $75.

We can search their salaries in Georgia. All I did was search title of 9-12 teacher because the other lists had custodial staff, front office staff, etc. Custodial staff and Lunch staff have a real complaint. They make around 20-25k max.

Seems like the school board office makes more than teachers, but you can see from this list that they aren't really hurting. Add in to that healthcare and other incentives of govt work and you've got a pretty good career.

Also, the lower ones are probably prorated salaries due to coming in or leaving the system (not a full year paid).

At my last place of employment, engineers started at 80. Teachers are underpaid imo. Period. From what I’ve seen from family members and the time they put in to working in a school when I was in college. The amount of bullshite they put up with is crazy. Most of y’all wouldn’t last a week in an elementary school.

Cobb County is also one of the highest paying if not the highest paying in Georgia. Below is their actual scale.

I just picked Cobb county because it was were you were from saying they weren't paid well. Actually it's pretty much the same across the counties. I know all our 'poor' South of Atlanta counties pay pretty much exactly the same as this Cobb.

Might want to try Catoosa County, Georgia. One of my good friends bought himself a PC with what he had left from his allowance one year. This was in the early 90s, when PCs were still pretty expensive.

He taught the kids that had behavior issues. Maybe they get a bigger budget or something, though.

It's criminal how the government and society forces people to be teachers. People should have choices when it comes to careers. They also should be told what the annual pay is before they agree to do a job. Most importantly if someone does not like their job it should be legal for them to quit and find a profession they enjoy.

Oh... wait a second....

Most teachers don’t teach just 10 months a year and work far more than 8 hours a day and they do it for shitty pay, while dealing with a-hole kids and parents. This thread is case in point about the feeling people have regarding teachers and, therefore, the education their children receive.

I looked into becoming a teacher and you can maybe find a gig where you can phone it in, but a guy I know who teaches at a very good private school here worked probably 70 hours a week after extracurricular functions that he had to do. And that was down from what he used to work early in his career. That’s not apples to apples with most teachers probably, but cut it by 20 hours and it’s still underpaid.

This is beside the point. We want our kids (or I do anyway) to receive excellent education. How do you incentivize good people to go into anything? Money is certainly right up there. So it makes sense to pay them well.
