My premium jumped 35% this year. Since I pay through escrow, it was going to drive my mortgage payment up around $200/month. I switched to another company today and got my yearly premium back down to what it was the previous year. The lady on the phone told me that they're getting a TON of people switching over from State Farm.

I had no claims and saw no reason for the increase fwiw. Just a heads up to help someone out if I can.

OT is incorrigible, unless that's a State Farm agent.

News flash. They don’t want to write homeowners in LA anymore because of hurricanes. But they can’t just stop writing policies or else they won’t be able to write auto at our ridiculous rates. So they request permission to raise premiums and do so knowing people will switch. Meanwhile, we are all still being raped daily on our auto policies.

They aren't doing it for free. You are simply buying into a pool of various kinds of risk.

I've had this happen with a bunch of companies. Allstate, Safeco etc. You have to shop it every 4-5 years.

Actuaries already know the percentages

Progressive because I got the bundle discount. I had to switch my auto from State Farm a few years ago.

Unless you are putting in new systems, a new roof, etc...your homeowners policy will generally increase due to the home aging as well as an uptick in dwelling coverage to keep pace with inflation. This year that index will be a bit higher than usual due to a lack of building supplies, in particular wood, and high demand for labor based off the hurricanes from 2017. Now a 35% jump is a bit excessive but they will rate increases additionally to a statewide level based off the combined loss ratio. These are insurance market realities and while you might shop around and reduce the rate, it will eventually rise again over time as most everything else does over time. Your agent should have tried harder to assist you however from how it sounds and that would be at their feet.

Did you try calling your agent first and asking them to rerate you? I sent my liberty mutual agent a text asking him to look at mine and the next day they lowered mine $700 a year.

This might be the reason for the big increase as their system might have been lagging in picking up that you had moved your cars. Generally the home/auto...auto/home discount is the biggest of all discounts and it is seldom a good idea to separate the two.
