US Patent & Trademark office is hiring hundreds of patent examiners this year. It's essentially the best civilian fedgov job out there imho. Uncompetitive promotions to GS-14. Full-time teleworking after about 4-5 years. Voluntary OT available. Flexible work schedules. Etc etc.

go to usajobs.gov and keyword search "patent examiner"

I've worked for the government before and will never again. My coworkers were some of the laziest barely employable people I've ever met.

How long does it take you to get there?

90-120k salary is pretty easily attainable for EE and ChemE

Sounds like a perfect job for lazy arse millennials living in Mom's basement.

Make sure you go and enlist for 4 years and then apply and you'll be guaranteed to get a spot. I am all for hiring veterans, but it's damn near impossible for even the most qualified non-veterans to get one of these jobs. Although I'm not an engineer so maybe those positions are different.

Absolutely. When I was looking for government jobs that was my experience.

straight out of college, I'd say about 6-7 years in you start at GS-7. less than that if you have industry experience and start at a 9 or 11

Not true at all. Applying for federal jobs require a completely different mindset when it comes to resumes. Plenty of books out there to walk you through the process.

Wrong. If your resume doesn't say military service on it, you're already 5 steps behind.

These people are REQUIRED BY LAW to give preference to veterans, and to mitigate the threat of being sued (or worse), they will hire an unqualified vet over a qualified civ 10 out of 10 times.

What bureau/department/whatever did you work in? Your statement is certainly true for many government agencies, but definitely not all.

how many vets have a BSEE or ChemE?

in my experience, there aren't many patent examiner vets whatsoever

I have two friends who are patent examiners and they're both doing very well for themselves

Not entirely true. Sometimes they just close the window without hiring anyone. Then they open it back up with hope to eliminate some of the candidates from the first go around.

Sounds like you missed out on a great opportunity. I’ve spent most of my career in the private sector and moved through the ranks pretty quickly. Had an opportunity for a dream job with the federal government, applied and got it. I did take a substantial pay cut but this wasn’t about money for me. Having a great work ethic and a considerable amount of experience gave me the opportunity to do many details and see a lot of the Country. Hard workers usually fair quiet well in the government.

10 years later, I still don’t make what I used to but I feel like I’m one of the luckiest people alive to be able to live where I do and do what I do. I’ll be the first to say sure, there are some lazy people, but there are also some great workers. I’ll put my team up against anyone.

One other thing I see in government is RIP’s. Retired in place is what I call them. With Trump’s economy we are seeing more and more of them retire thankfully.

Sorry you had a bad experience,.

That's fair. But both of my parents are vets and one has had a federal job for nearly 20 years. My grandfather was not a vet and was a civil engineer for USACE for 30 years. Though he got in in the late 70s. I imagine not many vets are also engineers so it may have just been the type of work I was applying for.

My point was mostly tongue in cheek - but I had help on my resume and application from several people with federal jobs and still couldn't manage to get an interview. Maybe I just wasn't qualified

You're exactly right that it's a completely different animal applying for those jobs.

There are so many window lickers in federal employment it's insane. And I worked for the IC. You would think that they would be able to use the restrooms correctly with a TS/SCI. Mental illness is rampant.

My wife got a good federal government job without military service. She does have Ph D though

Yes, Govt resumes are a completely different animal and have to be perfect. Having a date incorrectly formatted will disqualify you from a job
