Trespassing.
Don’t cross.
Muy mal.

quote:

There is a law in Louisiana, commonly known as the "Purple Paint Law", that says if someone marks their property with purple paint, its the same as a "No Trespassing" sign. It's actually a part of Louisiana Revised Statute title 14, section 63, titled Criminal Trespass. Here's what the section on purple paint reads:

(2) The placement of identifying purple paint marks on the trees or posts on the property, provided that such marks are:

(a) Vertical lines of not less than eight inches in length and not less than one inch in width.

(b) Placed so that the bottom of the mark is not less than three feet from the ground nor more than five feet from the ground.

(c) Placed at locations that are readily visible to any person approaching the property and no more than one hundred feet apart on forest land, as defined in R.S. 3:3622 , or one thousand feet apart on land other than forest land.

Yes. Mike Wampold, the big time developer in La has his entire property boundary of about 4000 acres marked with paint.

As I went walking I saw a sign there,
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing.
This land was made for you and me.

Really, though, it’s not just Louisiana. You realize that, right? Just to be clear.

Some people have the legal right to go on other peoples property without their permission because they’re there on behalf of the assessor. Idk if that’s the case for Louisiana though

I’m more concerned with the thought the people most likely to trespass have no idea about the purple paint law - even in Louisiana. Or other states for that matter.

Maybe we need a PSA campaign.

It’s not a legal requirement to post your property to keep it private. The law says that you know if you own the property you are standing on or not. If you don’t own it, you need written permission to be on it.
