Protocol for situation- random guy mowing your yard

So I came home tonight and there's a random guy mowing my yard. My yard isn't too big. It takes me 30-40 minutes with a push mower. I have a ditch that has gotten pretty bad, probably grass growing to 6-8 inches. But it's just the ditch. I needed to now it but it's been too wet with my push mower. So I figure the guy is being nice and just doing that on his rider, which would take roughly 2 minutes. But I see he keeps going. He's doing my entire yard. Which I mowed three days ago.
I don't know who he is- I moved into this house (which I rent) about a month ago. It could be a neighbor who's doing me a solid, or it could be a neighbor who's pissed that the ditch got so bad? I've never been in such a situation before. I'm inside waiting for him to finish while I decide what to do. I'm going to go out and talk to him and see what's going on.
What should I do here? Do I offer to pay? Thank him obviously, but what if he is doing it out of spite/anger?
Will update

Walk out with two beers and introduce yourself.

Offer him a bottled water.

Well, if you're renting, are you sure lawn services are not covered in the policy, HOA fees or anything?

Since you're a renter its not you're problem.

Go tell him that while he's at it, you need your oil changed.

Take him a cold drink and ask him what's up

good plan....
honestly, could be a mistake on his part or could be a homeowners assoc mowing your shite with intent to send you a bill...

UPDATE: So he mowed the ditch, and then 3-4 lines around the border and them left before I could talk to him?
I'm very perplexed about wtf just happened. If he just mowed the ditch- I would think he's just being nice and helping out since he has a rider. Then I assumed he was just doing the whole yard for some reason. But only mowing a couple lanes, and now my yard looks dumb, as it is uneven, and I have to either leave it looking dumb or go out and mow tonight.
