I knew a guy who leased an expensive luxury car, then he died unexpectedly. The widow was stuck with the lease, and it was a PITA to unload the car. Dealer was not sympathetic.

I like to lease. One major advantage besides driving new wheels every 3 years is my SUV is always covered under a full manufacturer's bumper-to-bumper warranty. If you buy and get a 72-month or longer note, you're still paying out the nose monthly, and you'll be stuck with expensive repairs down the road to boot! Imagine what it's gonna cost to repair all those electronics in modern cars these days, not to mention typical mechanical failures, which can be hugely costly. Also, what's your high mileage vehicle gonna be worth when it's time to trade in for a new one 6 or 7 years or longer down the road?

ETA: I can get 2 -3 new ones in almost the same timeframe when everyone else is stuck with the same old one and still paying a high monthly note

Some lease deals are pretty good right now, like a Tesla for $300/month with 1k down.

$1K down, $299 a month for 24 months. 10K per year mileage limit and $.25 per mile over at the end of the lease. If you drove it 24 months and put 15K a year on it. or 30K miles, it would cost you about $445 a month not counting the power to keep it charged. That seems pretty damned reasonable in this day and age.

Business owner here and I lease. New car every 3 years and the cost is essentially irrelevant.

Pro - repairs and mechanical issues are off your hands. Likely only having to pay for oil changes, likely can work those in at the dealership anyway.

Cons - $0 ROI

interest rates are still insane

The money factor on leases will track with interest rates for purchase financing. This should be essentially a push.

90% of people riding around in pick up trucks don't need them.
I agree and understand.

But of those 90%, some of them once or twice or three times a year will use the truck to carry or tow or extract something and then will have a decent probability (since they don’t do any of those things with any regularity) of doing them wrong and then will scratch, dent, or otherwise damage the grocery-getter pickup.

tl/dr People are idiots, rely on them to generally do the stupid thing

I’ve heard leases referred to as “fleeces” by dealership employees.

Leasing (renting vehicles) are people with similar demographics:
- Not highly educated
- high use of credit cards
- carry loads of debt
- perceived image
- keep up with the Jones mentality
