I would consider myself a staunch fiscal conservative, but I'm all for throwing billions into space exploration. This world needs another space race.

Not true at all. Voyager captivated the nation as did Cassini. Hubble continues to do so every day. New Horizons did when it flew past Pluto, the Martian landers did beaming images of driving across another world. James Webb will do so when peering back to the beginning of time.
These all captured our interest but not only that did legitimate science without the resource burden of having to keep a human alive to do it.

Only possible thanks to the work of NASA. It's thanks to the miracle of NASA that we have the society that we currently live in. It's no coincidence that the kids who saw the moon landing went on to found the digital age.

I'm all for it too, but do it smartly. If you are actually for exploring space then unmanned is the way to go.

Most legitimate experts believe space travel will not involve humans. The scale of space is too massive. You can send drone type technology to accomplish the same task at a fraction of the cost, and more efficient too.

You're right, but you'd be spending a trillion dollar investment for billions in savings. Not exactly a great ROI.

Voyager and Cassini were made possible by the advances in technology and funding provided for the manned missions to the Moon. And as much as those probes “captivated the nation,” the manned missions of Apollo 8 and Apollo 11 captivated the entire world. The whole world literally stopped to watch live TV from those two missions. You don’t get that kind of reaction from robots.

Yeah, because the government didn't benefit in the long term by having to miniaturize massive computers that used to take up the size of a warehouse into a machine smaller than a deck of cards that's also a thousand times more powerful. No return on their investment whatsoever.

I'd bet most couldn't name the space shuttles, doesn't know what the ISS is, know the names of a single astronaut, etc either.
