Burn every bridge at your current job. That is how to get ahead in life

Are we talking moving from one name brand(IE: state farm) to same or another ?

Yeah that's part of the whole job thing. You spend a good portion of your time here on earth in absolute misery and in exchange people give you money so you can buy shite you don't need.
Now quit your fricking job and report back.

My boss will be pissed, but he and I just do not get along, and I am miserable at work. It may be a generational thing, and he has told me on more than one occassion that I remind him of his "goddamned son".
I'm not looking to burn bridges, but he will not be happy.
Sounds like a bridge you will never need.

Would he give you 2 weeks notice were he to fire you?
You are merely a "human resource", not a person.
If you were a valued member of the "team", you would not be asking these questions.
Surprise him with your absense when he returns.
You will be teaching him a valuable lesson.
Anything less would be a disservice to the fellow.
To go far, feed the horses pulling the wagon oats rather than hay.

All you really owe them is a 2 week notice.
why are employees expected to adhere to this when employers don't?

He's the ex-pres of NAIFA and heavily involved in the Lions Club and other civic orgs, and I run two nonprofits in the area, so I would like to speak to them at some point.
May need that bridge.

Make a video about starting a cannibis distro center, speak an expletive, walk off.
Seriously, just give the 2 week notice and move on.

Why wait until he gets back to put in the 2 weeks notice?
Send him your resignation via email.

He is a member of the older generation, and cannot (or willnot) access email overseas.

That's not your fault that he is out of town.
The key is putting in your 2 weeks notice.
You have to stay an extra week because he's not there?
That's B.S.

Give 2 weeks notice that is all you owe them professionally.
Quitting a job with 2 weeks notice is not "burning down a bridge" but if this guy you work for is an asshat why would you ever want to return?
I can assure you if it benefited the company financially you would be given no notice and quite possibly zero severance for an ROF.
I'm not a believer in this matching the offer B.S. You'll never win any loyalty with your current employer by playing that game. Then, when times get tough guess who is the first to go? You don't like your boss so would 15% more money fix that?
TLDR: Go with the better opportunity.
