Project Controls Cost Certification & Primavera P6 Training

In the next year, I'm looking into trying to get a certification in cost. I'm looking at the AACE one but I'm not sure if there are other ones out there or if there is any that are considered the "standard".
The test requires industry experience and/or an industry related degree. I have 3 years of project cost accounting at a smaller oil/gas company and 3 years cost analyst/cost engineering at major oil/gas companies. I have a BS in accounting and MBA with concentration in finance. I'm not sure if that qualifies but I will check before.
I also want to take some courses on primavera P6 in the next year or so. The only local ones I have found are the 3 day courses that are around $1,500. Not sure how much you can learn in only 3 days. Seems pretty expensive for only 3 days.
Anyone have any experience with these things?

I heard if you get yourself some truck nutz, you know everything there is to know about oil and gas work baw. Including scheduling.

I'm a TAR Cost lead at a major refinery with a background in scheduling. The primavera class will teach you the basics of the software. It will show you how to enter activities, resources, activity codes and progress the schedule. You'll need to learn the specifics of the schedules where you work like how logic is entered, resource loading, WBS, progress types, duration types, etc.

Also, what are you looking to get with these certifications? I have a CM degree and an MBA...I know some people get PMP's, but they seem like a waste.

All of this is taught in the 3 day course?
I already have basic knowledge of a schedule. Like how to read it and basic knowledge on how P6 works.

From my experience, the course will teach you the very basics,(the buttons and what they do) but potential employees will want hands on experience. You will somehow need to shadow someone and get in the drivers seat a few times before P6 becomes an asset on your resume. I'm speaking from a Plant Maintenance side of things, not new construction. In the next few weeks i will be learning the system for a backup scheduler role when needed. great resume builder.

Just trying to advance my career. I eventually want to be a project controls manager. Thought it would help toward this. Maybe sharpen my knowledge on terminology and things we don't necessarily practice at work.

You haven't taken any training like this before have you?
$1,500 for 3 days is not bad at all.
I have taken classes that were $5000-$6000 for 5 days.

Lol you have an MBA...it's more important to learn how to use the schedule to forecast. Experience at your particular site is all you really need.

Primavera 3 day class will teach you the operation of the software. You'll only really "learn" it thru experience and really only by applying it to your actual job. Primavera is very powerful but nobody ever uses it to its full potential. You'll need to figure out which parts are really applicable to your situation. $1500 is pretty much typical charge for software classes like that. Anything cheaper isn't going to give you much training.

In my experience the expensive training classes out there are usually targeting people who have employers paying for people to attend these classes. They're also typically button pushing classes. Will your employer pay?
An alternative would be online training. Honestly just as good as some monotone professor teaching you from a manual. Youtube is usually a good(free) starting point for me. I also pay a monthly subscription for a technology portal with video training. I did some googling and it appears there are online services for P6 video training. For example:

Just a warning. Online self-training can be hard because you have to sit and focus. However after going through an MBA program I assume you're able to compartmentalize and focus for short periods of time.

I already forecast based on the schedule and also quantity reporting (looking at trends of quantities completed daily/weekly).

I have someone where I am at who will help me with some hands on training. I was looking to learn the basics before I sat with him though.

Probably not. I'm a contractor who works for the owner. And they hired me to do cost engineering so I'm not sure if they would be willing or not. I would have to bring it up with my manager.

Take the class....it'll give you some comfort....then learn as much as you can and get the understanding of why you would do things different in different situations..ie owner side bs contractor side or lump sum contract vs t and m or capital work vs maintenance....those are all the things that the class won't teach....then when you get into a behavioral based interview you can apply answers from your knowledge

Get the contractor that you are employed through to pay.....you have to sell it as the class will make you eventually billable at a higher rate which they in turn benefit from

I hire people in this field all the time. I've never put any value in a cost certification. It's a way to make people feel accomplished and let someone make money off of you. I'd stick with the P6 class and continue your field experience.
