A water-cooled WH generator with a 4cyl auto engine that runs off of natural gas is super-easy to maintain.

Unfortunately, we live in Southern Louisiana and hurricanes are a way of life, thus we do have more frequent power disruptions.

I respect your well-educated opinion, and agree on most points. We have more usage than most homeowners so we really rely on these units.

A maintenance contract from the generator installer/ retailer can also be a good option.

Power goes out in our area once or twice a month for 3 to 6 hrs. After chasing gas post Rita I invested i a standby. Fast forward 10 yrs and I was able to live comfortably through Laura and Delta with 32 days combined power outages.

Hopefully that townhome is where your servants stay. Certainly a ‘king’ would have more than that

6k for thr generator and another 3k-5k for standard install

This sounds pretty accurate. I'm a builder in Texas and like a dumbass didn't pre-plan infrastructure entirely (planned for back feed) in my own new build in 2020. Went whole home propane fed 26KW and it ran me $16K to retrofit a 5000 FT home, and probably would've been $20K without electrician doing me a favor. I had to extend a propane run, I had two service panels on interior wall and that included decent amount of circuit modifications as well as beefed up transfer switch. I already had whole surge protectors (Really wouldn't be without them period with the amount of cheaply made, sensitive electronics these days) but added a large APC for modem, router, and elevator motor.

Basically, its not the cost of the basic generator and basic install but all of the add-on's that will drive up the cost. A simple gas line extension can hit a $1000 really quick.

26KW Generac installed about 3 months ago, with 25 hour break in, yearly service maintenance plan, ATS, surge protector and all new smoke/CM detectors in the house. $13,500 all in plus a 10 year parts, labor and travel warranty from Boudreaux's Electrical out of Napoleonville.

Runs everything in the house except the electric heat. Install took two days over the course of a total of 2 weeks for permitting. We've put about 5 hours on it since it was installed, probably going to be getting good use the next couple of days.

I put a $5k deposit down on a 24kw Generac for the beach house this morning. All in will be $12,000 including flood stand. Should be finished about the time hurricane season is over.

Last year paid $11,500 for a 22K Generac installed.
I can run the AC, dryer, and bake cookies in the oven all at once.

Saw some at Sam’s for around $5500. Didn’t notic capacity but it was a general whole house.

I’ve been told to shy away from that brand.

Get a tri-fuel portable generator and have an interlock kit and 50amp plug installed on your house.

That’s my current setup. Total with generator & 50a interlock installed was $1500. I can run all necessities.

i had a 20kw generac air cooled at last house

have 60kw briggs and straton liquid cooled at this house

for a smaller townhome, just get an interlock and plug installed and get a predator 9500. you wont need more and if you do, you can buy another 9500 and parallel them in

i know harbor freight is frowned upon here but these are the knock off honda's after honda fricked up and let copyright lapse.

It depends on placement of the generator. The more gas line you have to run the more $.

It starts at around $10K for an air cooled unit. I have a 24 KW air cooled, and a 27KW liquid cooled at my new house. The 27KW is peaceful regarding noise.

Air cooled is much cheaper, like half the price.

You probably can get by with an 18KW.

Im not sure if you all understand that the main reason for the whole house generator aside from the oblivious powers everything, is that you dont have to procur fuel for it. It really becomes a hassle during a prolonged outage finding and transporting fuel.

I have a generac transfer switch installed when we built in 2022. Can I use a Kohler or do I need to stay with Generac if I get one?
