6500 coats were able to be given. Do you know how many students there are in the BR area? 94,271 so they could provide coats for 6.8% of the students. So we say well Pats got them screw the other 94%? Can you tell me what kind of jackets they are buying from St Vincent De Paul’s and goodwill? For $25 each it’s most likely not sub zero jackets is it? Like say half are. That’s 3250. So now 3.2% of them get it. Do I need to go further for you?

Does south Louisiana reach in to the 20s? Sure. Usually overnight. But usually back up to the 30/40s once the sun comes out. Not days of freezing temps. We literally hit a cold RECORD for Baton Rouge. It doesn’t make sense for a lot of parents to pay a bunch of money for a jacket that might get used once.

Yet their parents spend 300 - 500 bucks on shoes, how much on nails, hand bags?

The weather has been terrible in LR for one reason or the other for 2 weeks. I drove from Nashville to LR last night and by the time I got back I could barely see the lines on the road because of the fog. I-40 was a train wreck from the snow storm. Pot holes that you could sleep in. There was still snow in W Tennessee from 10 days ago. You don't see that in the South very often. Transportation has seen better days.

Maybe for that particular day, but in no way did we reach a record low temperature for the entire recorded history of the city. Plus, the danger was from ice on the roads, not kids who may be cold.

I'm all for closing due to dangerous driving conditions, but it's pretty fundamental for parents to get their kid warm clothes. All of those donated coats don't just spontaneously combust at the end of each winter. They can be passed down after being worn for years and years.

Many kids don’t come from homes that afford breakfast. You think they have real jackets for sub freezing degree colds?

I have a great idea. If you can’t afford to feed your kid breakfast and buy them a coat don’t get knocked up.

I agree. I was responding to what was said specifically.

I’m not arguing that because I completely agree. But we can’t punish the kids for the parent’s idiocracy.
Just look at the post from yesterday about the kid in the store in only a diaper and mom wouldn’t put clothes on him.

No shite Sherlock. Do you think I’m arguing that? I agree. But lo and behold here the kids are. So why should the kids be made to suffer on purpose because of poor parents?

We aren’t punishing those kids their parents are and we cannot fix that

But closing schools just because it's cold is punishing MY kids for the other child's parent's lack of sound judgement.

The number of kids in this parish who do not have access to a coat is very small. I can 100% promise you that even the "poorest" of our residents will still send their kids to school with new kicks and iPhones.

If a child is truly very poor, the school flags them from day one and the counselors will get involved and connect with appropriate agencies. These children stick out like sore thumbs. Their clothes are dirty, they are unbathed, have poor oral hygiene, etc. These cases are a small number of students, fortunately.

So, I'm beginning to just accept the fact that it's gonna rain for the rest of my life.

This is life now. The sun is gone.
