Agreed, if I am to call a doctor, of any sort, "Dr." outside of a professional setting, I should be called Master every time I'm addressed.

Can we all just agree that if you even THINK the word esquire in reference to yourself you are an a-hole?

Agreed. My old fraternity is putting an alumni directory together. Called me and got all my info including my work. Got an email of it and it included Esq. after my name. FML. Totally NF

ETA: I do put it on letters to other attorneys, not next to my own name.

Under the widely accepted rules of etiquette , only an MD/DO is expected to addressed as Dr. Yes, it is published in several etiquette guidelines. A PhD, chiro, etc. expecting to be addressed as Dr is erroneous in their self perspective. Truth

I've spent most of my life around PhDs. They're all doctors. And their professional title is Dr.

I'm in my moms office right now, and looking at her diploma, it clearly says "Doctor of Philosophy."

Some of the most arrogant people I've ever met have a doctorate and work in academia. They come off as remarkably entrenched and incapable of considering other alternatives to their conclusions about everyone and everything.

This line alone is worth going to medical school for.

Anyone who demands you call them "Doctor" during casual conversation is a pretentious douche.

Walk away from them as fast as you can.

Just respond with, "Huh... never would have guessed." Then introduce yourself as doctor as well, "Dr. Smith, but you can just call me Mr. Smith."

Is there anything more pretentious than a doctor correcting someone by saying "Doctor" after someone calls them "Mr." or "Ms."? Assholes...

Are you a Grad School wash out? Those unfortunates are some of the most bitter people I've ever known in the chemistry field...some of them having spent 7 or 8 years and end up coming away with nothing.

I worked with a guy who would sign all correspondence with JD after his name.

He failed the bar the maximum times but was proud to let us know he was a Doctor of Jurisprudence.

We would always get the new guy to ask him what that J.D. stood for. We would tell the gullible new guys that JD was another way to put junior of dad.

Outside of my office/clinic and hospital, I introduce myself by my first and last name, never felt the need to broadcast to people that I'm an MD...

DO is Doctor of Osteopathy, which is still a physician.

But an Optometrist, who can perform eye surgery, is not a doctor?

Hmmm ..... What kind of quackery is going on here?
