How many cold fronts have had school cancelled this year? This is the first I recall.

Your hyperbole is not useful. Sometimes a weather even doesn’t materialize. Sometimes it does.

Your melt is the equivalent of a patient who is mad that a biopsy comes back negative.

Right, and mine werent going to day no matter what. Know why? Because I was informed about the possibility of severe weather rolling through the area and we didnt want to have to get out in the weather and go get them if the weather was going to be as bad as predicted. We look like we are going to be ok in this one, but why risk it? Again, with the known FACT that severe weather capable of producing strong tornadoes was moving through the area, why would any school district take the chance? Its not just about the kids either. School is open, are the teachers required to go in? This brings up the schools liability as previously discussed.

Why does that have to be explained to you?

Again before you reply, its not all about being safer at home than at the school/ work.

Don’t blame the weather folk. Blame ambulance chasing lawyers. Businesses and schools don’t want the liability of keeping people there in bad weather

plus... as the OP of this thread... I feel like I must remind people that I am in central Louisiana... where numerous tornadoes have come through since I moved here from NOLA almost 7 years ago... including 1 that hit me directly about 2-3 years ago

so yeah... I take storm season seriously now

Back in the old days... The thought of being sent home for weather other than ice was laughable. Even rode out a tornado at St. Thomas More that destroyed the church. We all lived and were smarter and tougher for it. Quit being a parent who teaches fear to your children.

PS our weather people in Baton Rouge are always wrong since the the old guard retired. It's embarrassing.

100%

I don't blame the doctors or anybody that decided that wasn't an acceptable risk to take. But it's clear that we either need a new, more nuanced warning structure, or the people making the calls on these events need to be more sure before making said calls. Otherwise it's just all a big waste of time

Good luck.

It’s not an exact science, but you don’t see people bitching at their doctors that 70% of prostate biopsies come back negative.

If your location is accurate, and you are in Hattiesburg, then it probably makes sense to take these more seriously. But if you live in Baton Rouge, Ascension, West Baton Rouge, etc. it's much more likely to be virtually non existent. We keep getting put in the same risk categories on days like this, but our outcomes almost never equal out

Its not teaching fear. Its teaching informational awareness and risk management.

. Like I said, y’all assume people are safer at home. Maybe they would actually be safer in a large building at work. It’s not exactly clear that there is a benefit to cancelling everything.

Who in this thread has advocated everything be cancelled? Who has said everyone is better off at home? At worst ITT it is said people should go to their “safe place” whatever that is. For some it’s home, for some that live in mobile homes it isn’t, for some it’s community shelters that are becoming more and more common

It is accurate. I do live in Hattiesburg. And what makes this scenario worse is that Im offshore and my wife is at home with our 7yo, 18 month old, and 9 month old.

But people like him dont understand that there are other people in the world and this place doesnt revolve around him.

Just because it was "just a thunderstorm" to him, doesnt mean it was for everyone.

Why do we need to be warned days in advance of a potential storm front?

The field gets good at giving people plenty of warning and someone complains about the early warning. Give no warning and you'd bitch too.

Why do people assume they are safer at home rather than work or school?

We've been tracking storms in here for a few days, not talking about closures. I think your issue is the closures and those decision makers.

You can’t control where a tornado goes, it could kill you in your house when you are home trying to stay safe

Ok and if people are aware it could happen they can just execute their plan and get to the safest spot in the house. Hence why you let people know the threat is there.

And fwiw, I’m not even really defending today - it was a bust for most of the moderate risk area, and it was trending that way around midnight or so.

However, it was a very reasonable prediction given the set up. It didn’t pan out. Good for us.

People that fuss about “we didn’t do this blah blah blah ago” also fail to realize how much better we’re getting at modeling the weather. Had the same information been available in (insert year), the same decisions would have likely been made.

Only 1? Tornadoes are apart of daily life rt, you can’t let one little direct hit bother you
