A canister of Greek fire and a torch. Guarantee your opponent will get smoked.

Can I wear white after labor day if it's covered in the red blood of my enemies?

It's been proven that spears are far superior to swords in hand to hand and group combat. And a lot easier, cheaper, and faster to make.

They just aren't as sexy.

A spear in the hands of trained fighter has reach and kill ability that the sword just can't get past.

I think media hasn't done this justice and given the arming sword far too much importance, though it looks great in fight scenes.

Infantry formations bristling with long spears was one of the toughest formations to overcome. Even the daimyos of feudal japan started deploying massed spearmen (ashigaru) to great effect in conjunction with matchlocks (teppo). The katana, like the arming sword of medieval europe, was both a sign of status and a secondary weapon.

For the OPs question, I'm going to assume a 1 v 1 scenario where we are both armored with chainmail. Going with a Mace. If you don't break through the armor you're going mash up their insides.
