In the US poverty is a moral failure for the one in poverty.

For an adult to be in poverty when they don't want to be in our country is an indictment on that person more than anything else.

In countries like N. Korea, Venezuela, or Africa its a moral failure on the part of their leaders.

I agree. Poverty is the moral failure of the individual who is in poverty, period. No one else's fault. Not the government, not the city, not the county and not their next door neighbor. Each individual in the US is provided a means to correct wrongs if they can prove it...so blaming it on another person/entity has to have merit...otherwise you're merely complaining.

We all can be in poverty if we want to...just throw your hands up and say, "frick it". I'm not doing anything to survive or make money...you'll soon find yourself in poverty. If "born into poverty" individuals can make a change...they just have to make up their minds to do it and go through with the plans. People do it all the time. For example "I was the first person from my family to graduate from college". That person made a change...they felt it necessary to climb up.

In the end...in the US....poverty is the individual's choice. No one elses.

Americans don't know what poverty is. Poverty is all relative. In any society, some people will have more resources and wealth than others. But in America, our poor people live like the upper classes of the rest of the world.

Some times, sometimes not. You paint with a pretty broad brush.
What about mental health issues, developmental disabilities and health issues?

This country does not have real poverty, except in drug and mental illness situations.

There will always be a percentage of the population that is technically in poverty, but only because the lower percentages are always considered to be at that level regardless of the actual dollar figure.

Most people in the South prior to the 80's grew up with what would be considered relative poverty today.

While accurate, that doesn't disprove his point. The lowest earners, regardless of what they earn, will be subjected to the limits of poverty.

In most capitalistic societies, what has defined "poverty" has come with more and more amenities. Again, over time, everyone wins.

It is almost miraculous.

The only people that are really bad off are mentally and physically disabled people that have no one to care for them.

Everyone else made choices.

Americans living below the poverty line are obese. These people aren't starving and have drinkable water unlike other parts of the world.

Hard work and education can pull any mentally stable person out of poverty regardless of race or social status.

I think America does more than enough to help the disadvantaged. I also find no morality in stealing from one to give to another, so more handouts is definitely not the answer.

Poverty is not a moral failure. Some choose because of lifestyle, some make poor choices and find themselves stuck.

Taking other people's money to subsidize poverty is a moral failure.
