Focusing on the cross in the middle distorts how your eye sees the two images. Your brain starts mixing them together, so they start looking very distorted.
If you focus on one side of the images, you can see that they are slightly modified. By focusing on the cross, you end up seeing the modifications and the photos end up look way more grotesque.
It works for me way more than those "3-D" images I'm supposed to see in those comic page focus things. I have yet to see anything in those.
