Please expound on this. I'm wanting to see how this is a good thing for sure.

Lower tax rates, better performing schools, business and family friendly = lower crime, higher growth rate, and greater quality of life

Currently in New Orleans but possibly going to move for work. Options are Pheonix, Salt Lake City, Winston-Salem, Charlottesville, and Nashville.

Pros/cons?

Just moved from New Orleans to SLC in November. I've loved it so far. The outdoor options are insane, and we've already done a day hike this year not 25 mins. from the city. Couple of of well supported pro teams in the Jazz and RLS, good bars and the food is better than expected. Certainly not New Orleans, I do miss that, but it isn't as bad as some say. The beer is actually really good out here and so many things are a short flight or 8 hour drive away... All the southern Utah Parks, Yellowstone, Vegas, Grand Canyon, etc. Park City is a fun time too. The people are super nice, and Mormon culture, while abundant of course, is really a non-issue. And mountains. Everywhere.

I'm looking forward to being here for at least a few years, if not longer. I've spent most of my time in Wisconsin and Louisiana with a short stay in Texas. Utah seems to be the place where I'll like living the most. When spring hits and I'm going down to Moab for the weekend...yeah.

I've spent a good chunk of time in most of these and still work out East mainly, even though I live here. I'd rank them:

1. SLC
2. Nashville
3. Charlottesville
4. Phoenix

No significant time spent in WS. 2 and 3 are close and I'm just not a fan of Phoenix. If we're talking Tempe/Chandler, it's much better.

I don't get why everyone is saying SLC? It's tough not being a mormon in that city.

Huh?

Thanks for all the information.

I'm married with two little boys so having family friendly things to do is important.

Clearly, he's never spent extended time in SLC. But you have and know what's up.

I've visited SLC. Very nice place. I wouldn't want to be there during the winter though.

That's SLC to a T. It actually isn't a super great place for young single folks or recent college grads (to a point, one suburb Sugarhouse is great for that). That's one of the really positive effects from being a little conservative and having the Mormon culture, there's a heavy emphasis on things being family-focused and family friendly.

Our QoL sky-rocketed here, just a great place to live so far.

I'm surprised Salt Lake City wasn't your runaway answer for obvious reasons

They are all a huge step up from New Orleans. Perhaps you can throw darts at a map to help you in the decision process.

The relatives I have in Utah have mentioned a few times how non-Mormon/LDS people are sort of outsiders there. Just something to keep in mind.

I spent a month in SLC, live just outside of Raleigh, and I've spent significant time in the other places, except Phoenix (did Tucson and Lake Havasu, tho)

SLC is hands down #1...

Caveat, I'm a survivalist type, jeeper, outdoorsman.
WS is close to some nice spots, but still hours away, and there really isn't anything other than CBB in Raleigh anyway.
My dad lives outside Charlottesville and it's OK...very OK.
Nashville is a great place to visit.

I spent Memorial Day Weekend 2012 on a mountain lake near Park City, fresh fish, light snow, no humans in sight.

Just awesome.
