quote:

It’s been a rough year for the American psyche. Folks in the U.S. are more unhappy today than they’ve been in nearly 50 years.

This bold — yet unsurprising — conclusion comes from the COVID Response Tracking Study, conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago. It finds that just 14% of American adults say they’re very happy, down from 31% who said the same in 2018. That year, 23% said they’d often or sometimes felt isolated in recent weeks. Now, 50% say that.

The survey, conducted in late May, draws on nearly a half-century of research from the General Social Survey, which has collected data on American attitudes and behaviors at least every other year since 1972. No less than 29% of Americans have ever called themselves very happy in that survey.

Most of the new survey’s interviews were completed before the death of George Floyd touched off nationwide protests and a global conversation about race and police brutality

quote:

What is surprising, said Louise Hawkley, a senior research scientist with NORC at the University of Chicago, was that loneliness was not even more prevalent.

“It isn’t as high as it could be,” she said. “People have figured out a way to connect with others. It’s not satisfactory, but people are managing to some extent.”

The new poll found that there haven’t been significant changes in Americans’ assessment of their families’ finances since 2018 and that Americans’ satisfaction with their families’ ability to get along financially was as high as it’s been over nearly five decades.

I'm very happy with my personal life. I've got nothing to complain about, and nobody would listen if I did.

Not particularly filled with glee about the general direction of society, though. Probably read too much about current events. shite makes me cynical and pessimistic.

I should take a page out of my brother's book. He spent the last three weeks giving private rafting tours to a bunch of millionaires and billionaires. He called me yesterday wondering what the frick has been happening. Ignorance really is bliss.

Tearing down the statues should do the trick.

When the State & local authorities put people on fricking lock-down in response to the fear-mongering over a damn virus and people lose their jobs with businesses crippled if they can return, no wonder people are unhappy. Top that off with the protest shite and even more fear-mongering over the "2nd wave" bullshite and what you see is what you get.

Stay-at-home order my arse.

I'm no billionaire, but I've got a trip planned out West in early July and rafting will be the headline for a day or two. Can't wait.

Who knew being couped up in a house would have negative psychological effects?

I'm an introvert so I'm relatively unaffected but I can imagine that extraverts have never been as depressed.

If this country were to legalize voluntarily euthanasia for adults that were physically healthy I bet that 10 to 15% of white men would gladly get in line to be put down. A very small % of women would think about it but they would change their minds at the last minute and choose to live. Blacks, Latinos, and Asians wouldn’t do it because they have a strong desire to live and also they have the government on their side to help them.

ETA: Y’all downvote me, which is ok with me I understand, but nobody refutes my points or opinion. Why am I wrong please give me constructive feedback.
