David Benoit was not on the 1984, 1985, or 1986 all state basketball teams

And your brother didn’t play college basketball

It blows you away that some people actually do things that exceed your abilities.

You cant even comprehend that kind of ability.

6th man his frosh season, had a car wreck that ended his basketball and baseball career. He was going to play both. Lots of media coverage of his recovery in S'port.

While you were having a booger flicking contest with the other dweebs, there were dudes out there doing dude things.

The only honorable mention all state players in 4a from the Shreveport area from 1984-1986 are black

One of which played football for lsu

I caught your arse in a bold face lie

You’re trying to turn rich and poor into a black and white thing. I grew up middle class…maybe even a tad above. We didn’t hurt for anything, my parents knew how to save, and teaching salaries could buy you a nice 2000 square foot home.

When I went into the profession, those were my goals as far as lifestyle goes. Again, not rich, but certainly not poor. I would be fine with a nice middle class life and the ability to the things my parents did. That isn’t the case now.

Not really, but kind of. None of those things should have been unprecedented considerations for an 18 year old.

I don’t expect any of my current HS kids to have that foresight. Generations are getting dumber at that age because of life experiences. In my family, divorces weren’t happening…at all. I didn’t plan my life at that age factoring in a possible divorce, child, and formulas for how the government would take from my paycheck. In hindsight, it would have been nice. Those things weren’t on my radar at 18, and I suspect they aren’t on many people’s minds at that age.

the area where you and I, and your brother played was an incredible hotbed of talent, iirc, all-city encompassed both sides of the river back then, our qb my senior year never made all anything but was a four year starter in D-1, carried a clip board in the NFL for two years, we had two senior qbs that year and the other guy played four years of college ball, all-city was hard to crack, I made all-district in baseball twice, once in football, was a slug in basketball but lettered two years, can't remember who the sponsor for the Bossier legion team was back then but I remember everyone on that team my senior year was all something, including the all-state mvp, he didn't even play the first time we played them that summer, I guess we weren't worthy of him breaking a sweat

Yep! Many of my teammates my Sr season played at Centenary. My best buddy to this day actually got to pitch against Ole Miss.. Jim Wells was an assistant at Airline for my Sr year.

Bossier Legion team had a big advantage as we drew from the entire parish. Parkway, Bossier, Airline and I believe Benton. I only played one year of legion.

My brothers HS team had a kid who went to UNO (when UNO was real good) University of Houston and Centenary (Larry Robson who got an NBA ring with the Rockets.)

Larry stayed with my brother when his younger bro was dying of brain cancer in high school for a while. Very poor family, my mom was a saint and helped him a lot.

My brother played with the Belle Brothers in various all star teams when they played in Bossier's Dixie league. There was a lot of really good talent in the area at that time.

There wasn’t a single player in 1985 or 1986 that made honorable mention all state in basketball from Airline so how would it be possible that your brother had a teammate at airline and there was no one all state (since your brother made it)?

If this is who I think it is, I know for a fact his batting average was highly exaggerated by his teams scorekeepers. Walked once and his average went up, I believe.

When your burn rate is greater than your income, you’re poor. It doesn’t matter what your income or how much your house is worth, if you have no investments you will work until you die.

Sounds like you and your brother since he didn’t make honorable mention all state like you said

there really was, a guy that grew up down the street from me is in the NFL HoF, the guy that took his place after he went to college had a long NFL career, his younger brother played in the NFL, a guy a few blocks down the other direction played for the Cincinnati Reds a few years, we just thought it was normal, seemed like almost every older kid was getting a college scholarship

When I was 9, this ex Bossier High player who was in the minors would take BP at Walbrook with a pitching machine. He would always let us kids shag balls and even hit off the machine. First time I ever saw a 90 mph baseball lol.

Mike McConathy lived three houses down from me. He was drafted by the Chicago Bulls, but got cut. Still coaches at Northwestern I believe.

Mikes dad was the superintendent of schools and played for the old Milwaukee Hawks of the NBA.

we had a lot of the older guys come back too, they were incredibly supportive and helpful, more so than teammates one of the guys, who was pitching for Northwestern at the time showed me my first slider, I'm thinking, I better figure out a legit line of work to make a living

Mike would meet with us teens at First Baptist in Bossier on many Friday nights and put on clinics for us. We called them "games" but it was basically Mike kicking everyones arse.

I was blown away just being on the court against someone that talented. His brother Bill was pretty good too.

A guy who played for East Texas Baptist struck me out three consecutive times on a wicked breaking ball. I saw the signs on the wall that day.

I took his money in poker later that weekend though.
