Well you can leave anytime. One can hope.

Mingo and I disagree with you. A grocery bill for 5 men is not the same.

I could feed 5 grown men bologna for a week and we'd survive.
Buying food for a family with 3 kids is a different kind of horror.
You have it very backwards.

Don’t call yourself dumb. You actually said it.
Ok, well that’s it for me. Mingo and I agreed on one thing. It’s not much but it will have to do.

Sounds like you live in an area you can barely afford. $1500/month for daycare is absolutely ridiculous.
You obviously don’t know shite about DFW. East Dallas=more ghetto and $1300-$1500 is cheap.
$2000+ is going rate for most places inside the loop.

lol at the dude talking about 180k with a gf and a 45% savings rate “taking 2 trips/year”.
Get married and have a kid dude. That 45% savings rate will vanish like a fart in the wind on top of you taking a significant haircut on your net worth by that time.
Better hope you’re making 275 by that time.

Childcare is way higher than that. Almost double until you get them into grade school. Then it’s not the childcare but the sports. And juggling your time to get them there.
Both problems solved by having a wife

Sorry. I just missed it. We are self employed and I could buy another house with what I’m paying in health insurance premiums.

I hear you, I have a friend that's a carpenter in North Louisiana who said he's paying twice his mortgage for health insurance.

$3195 x 2 = monthly take home $6390.00
- $2,400.00 Mortgage - Escrow with Taxes/Insurance
- $1,000.00 car loans/maintenance
- $550.00 Car Insurance
- $300.00 Electric
- $250.00 TV< INTERNET, Subscriptions etc
- $600.00 kids (daycare, school )
- $450.00 random debt
Leaves $840.00 "a month" for food and entertainment, ain't nobody getting rich on that
Using your numbers:
Mortgage/rent - fine.
Car loans - living above means.
Car insurance- WTF? Is it that much in LA per month now? I pay $750 every 6 months for 2 cars/2 drivers full coverage in HI.
Electric - sounds high for an average in LA. Yet people shook their head at getting solar. I know that doesn't work for renters though.
Internet/TV - spending more than they should.
Kids - can't speak on that, will take your word.
Random debt - ? Like what?
I can see someone with 2+ kids making $100k having a rougher time than people would think. I also think people can do better on their decisions. One person making $100k then the wife can stay home and no need the child care. If both parents are out working to make that $100k and they live in a place where all their soft costs eat up everything, maybe they need to consider someone getting a different career going. Of course I would have told them not to have two kids if they can't afford it, but I digress..

Odds are she needs to work too unless you’re in the top 10ish percent of all income earners.

I make in this range and live comfortably. Stop providing for your 26 yr old kids and youll be fine. Also find a woman who is driven and makes decent money. Life is then played on easy mode.

The ENTIRE POINT of the thread is you SHOULD be able to afford 2 kids on $100k… easily
Damn

Most of this thread is about overspending and living within your means. But I wonder how much of the sentiment is related to economic factors like job losses and inflation. It feels like inflation keeps going up each month and while you might have been okay missing a paycheck or finding a job a year ago or now, missing a paycheck or finding a job in a month or a year from now seems like it would be much worse.

Yes, there has been inflation, but there has been wage growth that has outpaced inflation over time for all groups. The problem is more that U.S. consumerism has outpaced real wage growth. I see it in my own life and the people around me.
I know my wife and I spend money on things our parents wouldn't have dreamed of (and still don't) and we are still more careful and conservative with money than most of our peers. I'm talking travel, dining, food delivery, alcohol, extracurricular activities for kids (mainly sports), concerts/festivals, streaming, organic/high-end foods, fancy personal care products, spa services, etc.

Now do the inflation on housing, insurance, transportation, child care and health care. Get back to me and try and argue wage growth has outpaced it
