it just points out morons that go overboard with the app.

not really. they're trying to get back a pretty expensive piece of property that the police refuse to do anything about

and they use terrible propaganda to act like recovering it is difficult/scary, when the worst "bad" example was a fight that broke out...between the thief and the owner (which, ironically, got the police off their arse)

then, the police/state offers this 100X SCARIER solution:

quote:

Police chiefs have advocated another solution that they say could end smartphone thefts altogether: a mandatory “kill switch” that would render stolen phones inoperable and therefore unattractive to thieves.

the ultimate irony is that the arm of government attempting to dissuade people from protecting their privacy is claiming that they are the superior entity to protect property...while fully admitting the reason why individuals attempting this on their own is due to the failure of their own entity (the narrative that you may end up in a dangerous area)

I recently had a pistol stolen from me and I know who has it. Told the police about it and everything and I have yet to hear shite from them. Of course I am not going to recover it because this person is strung out and irrational on drugs but it fricking sucks when you can't do shite about your own property being taken.

Ask anyone who has called NOPD or BRPD with the location of some "good boy" who stole their iPhone using said Find my iPhone app, and they will all tell you how the cops laugh at them and do nothing.

I had two guys steal a bunch of stuff out of cars at a party. Totalled out to a few thousand dollars worth of stuff. Beat both up, and took one of their wallets and the other ones cell phone. Even with 20 people saying they were dropping our stuff, the police did nothing.

Two months later, the cops pulled them over and found a gun that they stole from another car. One guy was strung out on drugs and died. Can't say I wasn't happy about that

I have the app.

If my phone is ever stolen, I have no intention of going after it. The app is basically so I can wipe it/kill it remotely if it is stolen.

Yea he stole some other stuff from me and a local pawn shop even confirmed he pawned it there after I called them. Told the cops all of this and still no results from them. I figured if a drug head steals a pistol the cops would at least be interested in that but I guess not.

I could see maybe letting the other stuff he stole slide if they have more important cases to work but not a gun in the hands of a drug head.

They probably just see it as a hassle, and don't even bother telling their superiors about it, so nothing gets done. They'd rather give a speeding/brake tag/DWI ticket and have it over with right then and there

I filed the report and never even got a copy of it like I was supposed to and I have even called the detective allegedly assigned to the case twice and left messages. He's apparently too busy to even call me back.

shite like this is why people sometimes have no choice but to do things on their own.

The person in the article is an idiot. Cops will not waste their time finding a phone. A friend of mine had this happen in BR; find my iphone showed that it was at a house on Gardere. Called the police and they told him it wasn't worth them attempting to retrieve it.

I did go knock on his door already but of course he wasn't there. This was before I had discovered the gun was stolen and now knowing that I am not going to risk it. He's probably strung out in a meth house somewhere anyway.

It was a former employee who fell of the wagon FWIW.
